University of Exeter

Vice-Chancellor

The University of Exeter combines teaching excellence and high levels of student satisfaction with world class research at campuses in Exeter and Cornwall.  The University received its Royal Charter in 1955 and now has 23,600 students and 4,900 staff from more than 130 different countries.  A member of the Russell Group of leading research-intensive universities, Exeter’s success is built on a strong partnership with students, staff, alumni and stakeholders and a clear focus on high performance.
Exeter ranks 5th in the Russell Group, 6th in the UK, 9th in Europe and 24th in the World in the Leiden Ranking 2019, and has been awarded a Gold rating in the last Teaching Excellence Framework.  In the most recent National Student Survey, students also rated teaching quality and learning experience as amongst the highest in the Russell Group and Exeter is ranked second out of the 24 leading UK research-led institutions.

Recent research breakthroughs include the identification and treatment of new forms of diabetes and the creation of the world's most transparent, lightweight and flexible conductor of electricity.

Exeter’s research focuses on some of the most fundamental issues facing humankind today and, to continue to sustain and grow this reputation, the University is increasing investment in research infrastructure.

The Vice-Chancellor is the University’s Chief Executive Officer and holds overall responsibility for academic and administrative leadership within the University, and for representing and promoting the University externally.  The Vice-Chancellor will realise the ambitions of Exeter as a global university and enhancing its reputation for excellence in education and research.

Engaging meaningfully with all stakeholders to refresh the University’s strategic direction, the Vice-Chancellor will create and sustain a cohesive and inclusive community and develop a more diverse population of students and staff.

You will be a distinguished academic with deep knowledge of Higher Education both in the UK and globally and be able to evidence successful leadership in an appropriately large organisation and the ability to work in an increasingly complex and uncertain environment.  Candidates will also demonstrate proficiency in communicating a clear, compelling and distinctive view of the future; building commitment and turning vision into action; and developing and sustaining diverse and high performing teams.

This is a superb opportunity to lead a progressive and values-led university that delivers real-world impact.  If you have the right skills and experience, and share Exeter’s passion and ambition, we would be delighted to hear from you.

The University of Exeter appreciates and values difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the University’s overall success.
