About the position

Applications are invited for an Associate Professorship of  European Studies. The position is a full-time position (100%) in the European Studies Programme at the Department of Historical Studies at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway (https://www.ntnu.edu/ihs). The position is based in Trondheim.

The position reports to Head of Department at the Department of Historical Studies.

Main duties and responsibilities

The persons appointed will be required to participate in teaching activities in the Bachelor in European Studies and the International Master in European Studies. S/he will be expected to teach existing courses in the BA and MA in European Studies. The appointees will also supervise Bachelor and Master Theses in European Studies. Additional teaching and/or supervision duties may be required in accordance with teaching and supervision needs in the the Department. Courses in the Master in European Studies are fully taught in English. The language of instruction is both Norwegian and English in the Bachelor in European Studies. The successful candidates will be required take a share of the department's and programme’s administrative work.

The successful applicant must be an active researcher who will collaborate with colleagues to further develop research in European Studies at NTNU, initiate and lead projects, and participate in the European Studies Research Cluster. An ability and a willingness to contribute to research undertaken in the interdisciplinary European Studies Research Group “Trust in European Governance” will be an advantage.

Qualification requirements

The successful candidate must fulfil the following qualification requirements:

• Hold a doctorate in European Studies, Contemporary History, Political Science or another relevant field at the time of application;
• Be able to documented scholarly expertise in one or more areas of European Studies after 1945;
• Have a strong track record of international publications in the field.
• Have a fluent proficiency in English.

Desired qualifications include:

• A teaching qualification at university level.
• A command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. It will be considered an asset but is not a prerequisite. Newly employed staff in academic positions who are not already fluent in a Scandinavian language are expected to attend the courses "Norwegian for Foreigners" that are provided by the Department of Language and Literature and to acquire proficiency in Norwegian within three years at a level equivalent to level three of the course “Norwegian for Foreigners”.

In assessing candidates, particular weight will be placed on pedagogical competences and teaching experience as well as research achievements. Evidence of effective research collaboration and success in obtaining research funding will be a key assessment criteria.

Those who do not have formal qualifications in teaching at university level and who cannot provide documentation of equivalent qualifications must complete an approved pedagogical development programme within two years of appointment.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor is normally from NOK 544.400,- to NOK 607.700,- per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. 2% of the gross salary is deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund,

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

Process

Applicants are requested NOT to send copies of their academic works at this point. After the application deadline, a shortlist of applicants will be drawn up and all applicants will be informed of whether they are placed on the list. Shortlisted applicants will be asked to submit relevant samples of their academic work. The material to be submitted should comprise at most 5 items not exceeding 250 pages and may include excerpts from longer works and unpublished works.
