Histology Tech will perform a variety of routine histological procedures related to preparation of tissue for microscopic examination by a pathologist. To perform procedures including embedding, microtomy, staining, and other special techniques needed for diagnosis.

Embeds tissue and performs microtomy. Receives and prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination, including embedding, microtomy, staining and special techniques needed for microscopic diagnosis. Maintains lab work areas in good order including frozen section lab and gross rooms according to instrument manufacturer, safety and quality control protocols. Document appropriately.Utilizes lab information system effectively to determine status of specimens. Receives and prepares specimens for gross examination and dissection by the pathologist. Maintains accountability for a safe environment for patients and others. Demonstrates personal accountability for professional growth and supports quality and fiscal goals for department and institution.

Responsibilities Include:

Experience in large volume tissue processing in a clinical or research laboratory.

Prior experience working with human muscle, nerve and skin is a plus

Certification as a Histopathology Technician is a plus Experience with enzyme histochemistry.

Experience in performing immunohisto chemistry (colorimetric and fluorescent) Experience in plastic embedding and using ultramicrotomes for semithin sections or ultrathin sections for electron microscopy Experience in using cryostat reproducibly for frozen sections of unfixed tissue

Participate in administrative and regulatory procedures (e.g. CAP, CLIA) to maintain lab licenses and accreditation

Participate in patient care matters related to scheduling and performing biopsies, including assisting with surgical procedures

Ability to adapt to variations in workflow and effectively use electronic medical record systems

Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, patients, clients and regulatory agencies in and outside UAB

Demonstration of prior experience in paying high attention to detail and following protocols (from letters of reference)

Hourly Pay Range: $22.83 - $35.81

High School diploma or GED required. Currently certified or eligible for certification as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required. If eligible for certification, must be certified within two (2) years of date of hire.
