General Summary/Purpose

The Patient Navigator will work to enhance the recruitment and retention of minority patients and decision partners into cancer palliative treatment for cancer within the context of the CHAMPION (Cancer/Health Aid to Manage Preferences and Improve Outcomes through Navigation) study at Johns Hopkins. The incumbent will recruit patients and decision partners into the CHAMPION study, as well as provide clinic-based decision support for patients and decision partners and families related to palliative cancer treatment.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with clinics within the SKCCC to coordinate recruitment of patients and decision partners for the CHAMPION study. Perform eligibility screening and consenting of patients and decision partners into the study.
  • Develop a good working relationship with clinic staff.
  • Coordinate activities that raise CHAMPION program awareness among healthcare professionals and patients and decision partners.
  • Search Johns Hopkins patient databases for purposes of patient recruitment and patient navigation activities.
  • Educate cancer patients and decision partners about cancer decision-making.
  • Provide support services for patients and decision partners who are considering enrolling in palliative treatment for cancer, and continue to provide these services once they are enrolled.
  • Assess patient needs, identify barriers to cancer decisions and problem-solve to overcome these barriers.
  • Services provided to patients and decision partners may include: palliative treatment education, appointment reminder calls, referral to social services, provision of resources for transportation, insurance and other services, provision of moral/psychosocial support to patients and decision partners and family members, and other services.
  • Communicate regularly with clinic nurses, social workers and other personnel to obtain patient status updates and monitor clinic visits in order to properly navigate patient.
  • Assist patients and decision partners with any needs that may prevent the patient from making a clinical trial appointment and resolve any issues that may influence patient’s return or compliance.
  • Help new patients and decision partners learn how to navigate the health care system, become knowledgeable of available resources, and ultimately become more self-sufficient.
  • Work to ensure patient’s needs are being met by supplementing institutional services without interfering with palliative treatment for cancer research teams or patient’s treatment.
  • Carefully document all patient navigation and study activities in appropriate study forms and databases.
  • Implement navigation activities in accordance with the CHAMPION study protocol.
  • Attend monthly conference calls with patient navigators from other CHAMPION sites and collaborate with these navigators on other activities.
  • Participate in all CHAMPION-related training locally and nationally.
  • Other activities as assigned by Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Two (2) years related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three 3 years of related experience  
  • Research experience/ previous cancer-related work experience. Experience working in clinical setting.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong attention to detail, excellent verbal/written communication skills and self-motivation is critical. Strong organization and problem solving skills required. Successful accomplishment of tasks with high independence and minimal supervision. Ability to organize and manage multiple competing priorities and to meet deadlines. Strong problem solving skills related to research data quality and patient navigation. Strong computer and typing skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, and basic knowledge of databases and data documentation.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
