General summary/purpose:

The Research Program Assistant will be responsible for recruitment of all participants for the computational psychiatry research study and oxidative stress neuroimaging study at Johns Hopkins East Baltimore Campus and the Hopkins Bayview Campus, monitoring the study’s progress, and ensuring the study’s compliance with IRB and sponsor requirements.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

Responsible for participant recruitment through posting advertisements and screening the mood disorders inpatient unit and the Hopkins Bayview Community Psychiatry Program: verifies subject eligibility in accordance with research protocol; obtains informed consent; communicates with the study subjects throughout the research process; schedules interviews and blood draws; submits blood samples to laboratory for analysis; completes structured participant interviews, willingness to be phlebotomy certified; reimburses subjects upon completion of their participation.

Responsible for editing and entering data; corrects data by performing database ‘logic check’ procedures.  Create and manage a spreadsheet containing subject information and data.  Responsible for corresponding with the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutional Review Board (IRB):  prepares and submits annual continuing review request with supporting report; prepares and submits required amendment requests for research protocol; reports adverse events in accordance with IRB and National Institute of Mental Health (sponsor) requirements; adheres to all protocol requirements to ensure data validity and ethical treatment of subjects. Responsible for assessing and summarizing study progress with principal investigator and other researchers; maintains ongoing communication with coordinators at the other sites.  Orients all new staff (research assistants, residents, fellows, and clinicians) working on studies. Responsible for scheduling and facilitating a weekly meeting of study physicians and professional staff two monthly meetings of research staff members. 

Minimum qualifications:  High school diploma or GED. Two years work related experience.

JHU Equivalency Formula:

30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Public Health or other related discipline preferred. Previous research experience.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Proficiency in MS Windows, Paradox, Word, and Excel, phlebotomy certification recommended, professional attitude, mature outlook, good communication skills, and sensitivity towards clinical population.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
