Position Summary:

Contributes to the achievement of the hospital's mission through the development and leadership of performance improvement activities in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). The NSQIP Surgical Clinical Reviewer's (SCR) chief responsibility is to abstract, analyze and submit reliable data for the ACS NSQIP program. This is accomplished through high quality data compilation, documentation and entry into the ACS NSQIP database of all eligible surgeries for the hospital. The SCR is responsible for continual compliance with NSQIP policies and standards through monitoring activities and the use of NSQIP data.

Work Performed:

• Collect and submit reliable data to ACS NSQIP as prescribed by the program
• Responsible for accurate and timely data transmission to meet caseload accrual as defined by ACS NSQIP
• Utilize software applications for data collection and analysis
• Attend bi-weekly meeting with NSQIP Surgeon Champion to review occurrences
• The SCR works closely with the members of the Department of Surgery to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as may be identified.
• Attend division meetings to ensure reliable data collection of postoperative occurrences
• Identifies streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process
• Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the Surgery, Medicine, Nursing, Medical Records and the Information Systems Departments whose support is necessary for the management and success of the Program
• Contacts patients and/or families via telephone and/or written communications postoperatively for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with surgical procedures performed at the hospital
• Analyze and distribute NSQIP reports
• Assist performance improvement efforts
• Serve as an educational resource to the ACS NSQIP Pediatrics for internal and external audiences
• Attends ACS NSQIP National Conference

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Maintain certification as a Surgical Clinical Reviewer as defined by ACS NSQIP Program
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to communicate with customers/staff with diverse educational backgrounds
• Analysis of data and processes for opportunities for improvement
• Ability to manage numerous diverse projects simultaneously through effective priority setting, efficient use of time, organization
• Basic statistical knowledge
• Attention to detail and accuracy
• Self-direction; acceptance of responsibility for work
• Computer literacy (Excel, PowerPoint, Databases)

Education:

Bachelors Degree, BSN preferred.

Preferred Experience:

Minimum of 5 years work experience, including 1 year of experience with clinical chart review, monitoring of clinical data/performance and performance/ process improvement. Clinical experience in perioperative nursing, inpatient surgical unit, or surgical clinic preferred. Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience preferred.

Degrees, Licensures, and Certifications:

• Nursing license preferred.
• ACS NSQIP SCR Certification required within 10 months of hire.
