Department Head/Agricultural & Extension Education
The Department of Agricultural and Extension Education strives to provide students with content knowledge, technical skills, and applied experiences that will establish our students as successful teachers, agents, and industry professionals. The department offers B.S. majors in Agricultural and Extension Education and Agriculture and Community Development, and a distance or face-to-face M.A. in Agricultural and Extension Education with emphasis areas in Agricultural Education Teaching, Extension and Non-Formal Education, and International Extension and Development.
New Mexico State University is a comprehensive land-grant institution of higher learning accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities. An active research university, NMSU anchors the southern end of New Mexico’s Rio Grande Research Corridor, exceeding $140 million in research and public service expenditures. We seek candidates with appreciation for our multidisciplinary department and the vision, energy and enthusiasm to provide dynamic leadership for teaching, research and Extension/outreach activities.
The department head serves as an advocate for the department and reports directly to the Dean through the Associate Dean and Director of Academic Programs in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. The department head is responsible for implementing the department’s vision, and all aspects of administration including fiscal and personnel management, developing and maintaining departmental facilities, faculty and program evaluations, and administering departmental programs. The department head is expected to exercise foresight and effective leadership while fostering positive working relationships among faculty, staff, and students within and between academic and extension departments and our clientele. Some teaching within the department will be required. A commitment to strengthening support for teaching, research, and Extension/outreach is essential. Ability to promote the department to the college, university, industry, granting agencies, government, and clientele is vital.
Candidates must have attained the rank of Professor or equivalent, or Associate Professor eligible for promotion to Professor within the department, with a doctorate in Agricultural and Extension Education, Agricultural Communications, Agricultural Leadership, or another related field.
Evidence of leadership including team-building skills, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and administrative experience while serving in an academic agricultural education unit. Candidates should also demonstrate excellence in teaching and research and have experience in recruiting and mentoring students and faculty, including those from diverse cultures. Candidates should understand and have a strong commitment to the Land-Grant University mission.
