Position Summary
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Develops and oversees the operational budget for Lake City Research Center.
Plans and coordinates short- and long-term operations including land and livestock management including oversight of beef cattle registration and data collection.
Maintains and updates comprehensive records of land use, tilling, sub-irrigation lines, planting and harvesting data, soil tests and chemical applications.
Supervises the maintenance of equipment and building facilities.
Manages all research projects to ensure that protocol is followed correctly at the farm level.
Coordinates and plans production, sale and merchandising programs including breeding, forage inventories and cattle marketing.
Conducts farm tours to promote public relations and provide information.
Performs duties normally associated with a Farm Manager I to complete necessary tasks.
Responsibility for the Work of Others
Provides first level supervision over regular and student employees.
Responsibility for Health/Safety of Others
This position has responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities include training employees in the safe handling of animals and the safe operation of equipment.
Impact on Programs/Services
The position contributes to reaching ongoing research goals and objectives. The success or failure of a harvest season or breeding and livestock care program directly impacts the success or failure of research projects and the general financial and operational functions of the unit.
Position is located in Lake City, Michigan
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which is normally acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Agriculture and/or Crop and Soil Science; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervision, management, crop production and livestock management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and a Pesticide Applicators license.
Desired Qualifications
Required valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position.
Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
The position requires or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations; and the ability to use email and internet.

Summary of Physical Demands
Mildly disagreeable working conditions including exposure to adverse weather conditions. The job requires heavy physical exertion including lifting and moving equipment and harvested crops of over 75 pounds and handling animals up to 25% of the time.
