Job Summary

The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is home to four departments and many programs and research centers that cross disciplines. We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences. MCS faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research in a variety of fields, including polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance and neuroscience.

The Mellon College of Science is seeking an Assistant Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations Officer who will be responsible for supporting efforts to engage the financial support of the research and teaching of MCS from corporate and foundation communities.  In this role, you will work closely with the Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations and the MCS Advancement Team on the development of mutually beneficial partnerships with corporations, institutional partners and foundations in support of the MCS strategic plan, the University’s strategic priorities, and the goals of the Advancement Division.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Organizing university campus events for corporate representatives and foundation program officers.
  • Working with faculty and student groups to secure sponsorships to conferences and events that will include writing and dissemination of one-page sponsorship opportunity sheets.
  • Serving as primary liaison to Career & Professional Development Center.
  • Maintaining MCS intranet listings of foundation RFP opportunities.
  • Developing a system for tracking the submission of proposals to foundations; reporting on the pipeline and success of submissions.
  • Researching foundation opportunities and collaborate with Director and Associate Dean on engagement strategies.
  • Working with faculty teams to prepare, review, and edit formal foundation proposals. Identify and analyze information pertinent to development of relationships with potential corporate and foundation donors. Prepare and present reports for university officials and external audiences.
  • Identifying opportunities for faculty to serve on corporate, foundation, and government advisory committees.
  • Maintaining and developing a library of faculty profiles for use with foundations and corporations.
  • Managing a portfolio of 25-35 corporate and 25 foundation prospects.Develop, execute, and evaluate strategies and programs to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward all prospects.
  • Traveling to visit prospects, when needed, to raise awareness of university initiatives and solicit gifts.
  • Maintaining up-to-date reports and records of all interactions using the Salesforce CRM.
  • Keeping current on programs and faculty, research and student initiatives at the university.

You should demonstrate:

  • Ability to relate well to, and understand the needs and interests of, corporations or foundations in order to develop and maintain positive relationships.
  • Capability to qualify, cultivate and solicit prospects. Interest in all aspects of science and a dedication to promoting the university’s funding priorities through developing excellent working relationships with faculty, academic leaders, alumni, and the university and college advancement teams.
  • Personal belief in mission, goals, and objectives of private higher education.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Attention to detail and strong writing skills are essential.
  • You should be able to travel around the region and/or to other areas of the country (expected 2-4 trips per year). Additionally, evening and weekend work will occasionally be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum three years of experience in fundraising, foundation, sales, or market development required; experience within a higher education fundraising setting preferred.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license required; successfully completing a driver's license verification on an annual basis required. Completing the National Safety Council Defensive Driver Training once every three years required.
