About the opportunity

The Department of Government and International Relations was the first politics department at an Australian university. Its teaching covers public policy, international relations, area studies, political theory, comparative politics, and Australian politics. In public policy, its teaching covers mainstream public policy, international policy making and public sector management.  In the most recent national research assessment exercise (Excellence in Research for Australia, 2018), Political Science at the University of Sydney was awarded the highest possible 5 rating, indicating “well above world standard”. The department also has considerable success in attracting external research funding. In addition, we are engaged in a series of interdisciplinary networks and projects, including the Sydney Policy Lab, the Sydney Environment Institute and the Centre for International Security Studies.

The Department of Government and International Relations is seeking to appoint a one-year fixed term education-focused Lecturer (Level A or B) in Public Policy. Applicants with expertise in any area of public policy are welcome, however, you must have relevant teaching in policy analysis and/or public management.

As the successful applicant you will:

• be expected to contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs of the department, with a particular focus on policy analysis and/or public management
• supervise honours and postgraduate students.

Education-focused roles are a specialised category of academic engagement reserved for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, pedagogical practice and design In this role you will be  expected to make a significant contribution to teaching and learning practice, design and evaluation within the Portfolio and will be on a trajectory towards leadership in educational design and delivery. The majority of your contribution will be to education (up to 70% - or 80% by mutual agreement), the remainder of your workload allocation will be available for research.

• a PhD (awarded, under examination, or very near completion) in public policy or a closely related field
