The appointee will be a member of ARC Research Hub for Australian Steel Manufacturing, hosted by the University of Wollongong (UOW), Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences (EIS). The Steel Research Hub has 6 core Industry Partners (BlueScope, Liberty OneSteel, Bisalloy Steels, Stocklands, Cox Architecture, Australian Steel Institute and Australia Industry Group), with BlueScope providing a major investment. In addition, the Steel Research Hub partners with 5 other Australian universities (University of Queensland, University of Newcastle, RMIT University and Monash University). The Steel Research Hub aims to develop breakthrough process and product innovations to enable the Australian steel industry to improve its global competitiveness.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the delivery of an important project titled "Zinc Removal via the Acid Leaching Process". The appointee will be responsible for conducting research related to the feasibility of zinc removal via leaching with different organic acids through a targeted experimental plan utilising facilities developed within the University of Wollongong, and working closely with the project partner, BlueScope.

Working within a UOW research team and collaboratively with a BSL technology team, they will be responsible for the design, execution and implementation of the research program, including the communication of results to both industry partners and through peer-reviewed journal articles.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in metallurgy, materials, chemistry or chemical engineering (or equivalent), detailed understanding of the adsorption/reaction mechanisms of chemical species on solid surfaces, the equilibrium of electrochemical reactions (including equilibrium phase diagram of electrochemical systems, modelling using FactSage or equivalent), and significant experience in undertaking liquid-solid reaction experimentation.
