Job Summary

The Division of Geriatric and Palliative of Medicine is seeking a qualified Database Analyst/Programmer Senior/Intermediate to work with a collaborative quality improvement (CQI) project. The Integrated Michigan Patient-centered Alliance in Care Transitions (I-MPACT) is a CQI that aims to improves transitions of care for patients leaving the hospital. I-MPACT works with hospitals and physician organizations throughout Michigan.

This is a full-time office-based position. The ideal candidate will contribute to the analysis and reporting of data gathered for quality improvement and research projects aimed at improving the cost and quality of care in the inpatient setting. The selected candidate will work under limited supervision and must demonstrate the ability to work independently. The selected candidate must understand both database and research complexities, and apply independent problem solving. Opportunities to participate in ongoing training, collaborative project meetings etc. are supported and encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Data Cleaning –Provides expertise in writing and editing programs to clean, manage, merge and analyze data. Independently conduct internal reviews of the data for quality, integrity and reasonableness. Identify gaps in quality/integrity and suggest/develop measures to address them. Ensure all data, including free text, is coded accurately and appropriately for use in analysis, presentations and publications. Develop a clear understanding of the data abstraction process for the registry data and suggest methods to ensure a high level of quality and accuracy.
  • Data Reporting - Conceives and develops data reports to meet the needs of participating sites with meticulous attention to detail. Independently identifies opportunities to provide reporting that is clear, concise and useful for both internal and external stakeholders. Explore the best tool(s) for providing reports to external stakeholders via a web-based reporting tool. All work and analyses must be performed using an annotated program (preferably SAS), as all work must be reproducible, with thorough preparation and maintenance of technical documentation of all data and analysis files.
  • Data Support -Address ad-hoc data requests from internal and external stakeholders in a timely and accurate fashion. Develop clear documentation to accompany raw data sets that are shared regarding changes to variables and questions over time. Provide data as needed for routine deliverables, meetings, presentations, posters and publications.
  • Registry change management – Work with the team to review changes to registry questions; make recommendations to ensure high quality data for coding and merging with previous questions. Problem solve issues related to merging multiple versions of registry data. Work with registry architect to manage changes to registry platform and infrastructure to ensure analyst’s needs are specified and met. Develop a test plant for any changes needed by the analyst, participate in testing with the team.

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications – Senior level

  • At least 5 years of experience in working directly with complex health care data sets; management, analysis and interpretation of data using standard software (such as Stata, SAS, or R). 
  • Master’s degree in computer science, biostatistics/statistics or relevant health care-related field.  A bachelor’s degree plus 10 or more years of experience working directly with complex healthcare data set can be substituted.
  • Knowledge of health services research design and fundamental epidemiologic principles.
  • Significant experience with independent computer programming.
  • Highly skilled in the use of database query tools and reporting software.  Business Objects and Tableau experience strongly preferred.  
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills. 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills including the ability to appropriately interact with external collaborators. 
  • Must be a team-player with demonstrated ability to work well with others. 
  • Experience working with registries and managing changes

Required Qualifications - Intermediate

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in computer science, biostatistics/statistics or relevant health care-related field.   
  • At least 5 years of experience in the management, analysis and interpretation of patient-related health care data using standard software (such as Stata, SAS, or R). 
  • Well-developed skills in using database query tools and reporting software.  Business Objects experience strongly preferred. 
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills. 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills including the ability to appropriately interact with external collaborators. 
  • Must be a team-player with demonstrated ability to work well with others. 
  • Experience working with registries and managing changes
  • Must be able to be present for 3-4 full-day meetings each year (typically scheduled 6-12 months in advance)

Desired Qualifications

Desired Qualifications – Senior level

  • Knowledge of or experience in the delivery of inpatient care is a plus. 

Desired Qualifications - Intermediate

  • Knowledge of health services research design and fundamental epidemiologic principles is strongly preferred. 
  • Independent computer programming highly desired. 
  • Masters level training is preferred.
  • Knowledge of or experience in the delivery of inpatient care is a plus.
