The Associate Director,

Memorial Union-Student Activities (“Associate Director-SA”) is a student-centered educator that supports the co-curricular experience, leadership development, career enhancement skills, and development of all students. The Associate Director-SA reports to the Director, Memorial Union, and assists in building bridges with academic areas and building a sense of community on campus, as well as with the Ames community. The Associate Director-SA advises student-directed organizations that plan and implement major campus events to develop community and alcohol-free alternatives. The Associate Director-SA plays a major role in the overall economic growth of the Memorial Union through providing developmental and programmatic opportunities to on and off-campus organizations and through leased space in the Lynn Fuhrer Lodge. The Associate Director-SA oversees all major assessment initiatives for the Memorial Union, including programs, student employment, training, tenant services, events, and building usage. This collaborative administrator works closely alongside students, student leaders, members of the Division of Student Affairs, and campus partners to help enhance the college experience for all students.

The Associate Director-SA assists with expanding, developing, supporting and promoting programming initiatives that address the needs of students at various stages of leadership development; develops and supervises implementation of policies and procedures related to student organizations; actively advises campus activities for students and directly advises major student groups and events, including the Student Union Board of the Memorial Union, in connection with all aspects of program planning, budget development, contract negotiation, marketing, and public relations. The Associate Director-SA develops and maintains collaborative partnerships with a variety of campus departments, community agencies, faculty and alumni on student-related educational programming, and collects and analyzes data on student groups.

The Associate Director-SA is responsible for supervision of five professional staff, one merit staff, three graduate assistants, and practicum students, student interns and student staff, along with budget development and management, programs, activities, operations, procedures, and evaluation/assessment within the following areas: Student Activities (leadership and organizations), Programming Arts (Workspace – arts and crafts studio, Memorial Union art gallery space, and the Memorial Union permanent art collection), Maintenance Shop (concert venue), Recreation Center (billiards, bowling and game area), and student office space.
