2 PhD Opportunities (with stipend) – Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM)

Ferroelectric materials for electromechanical transducer applications.

The opportunity

AIIM is the flagship research institute at the University of Wollongong with a focus on multidisciplinary Materials Science fundamental and applied research. Australian Research Council (ARC) projects are underway at AIIM and the PhD opportunities arise from these projects. The project focus is on ferroelectric materials for electromechanical transducer applications. The research aim is to investigate ferroelectric single crystals, which are expected to possess high piezoelectric properties taking advantage of piezoelectric anisotropic and engineered domain configurations. Material compositions will be down-selected and solid state conversion or Bridgman growth methods used to grow crystals. Research outputs will lay a solid foundation for understanding the ferroelectric crystal growth, property characterization and potential for transducer applications.

The research work will be undertaken, on a full time basis, at the AIIM facility at the Innovation Campus in Wollongong, New South Wales.

The 2019 Research Training Program (RTP) living allowance stipend rate is AUD $27,596 per annum (indexed annually), tax-free for three years and is offered as part of this PhD opportunity.

Applicants should hold a First/second class Honours Degree or hold equivalence in an appropriate sector, demonstrate strong research skills and English language communication ability. Applicants with a background in the broad fields of materials science, engineering and physical sciences are encouraged to apply, with priority on electronic ceramics and piezoelectrics.
