Job Duties

The Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (CCNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) is a member of the cardiothoracic intensive care team and has his/her primary responsibility the management of critically ill complex (multi-organ) patients in an intensive care setting.

This position reports to the department of Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) works collaboratively with the Heart Center.

The CCNP/PA has specialized skills and knowledge related to the unique ICU setting in which s/he practices (Acute Care Unit: 3200) and performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care services.

This position also acts as a resource to (3100/3300) step-down cardiothoracic patients, if special needs arise within their area of skilled expertise.

The CCNP/PA contributes to a continuum of excellence in patient care, research teaching, consulting, and provides leadership to the organization and nursing profession.

Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program,with a Master's degree in Nursing. Critical Care / Acute Care NP Master's or completion of ACNP/CCNP post-Master's program strongly preferred. -OR- Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.


1 Year of Experience in an ICU setting experience  (PA, RN, or NP) strongly preferred but not required.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required priorto or within 6 months of employment. Certification as an Acute Care or Critical Care Nurse Practitioner. -OR- Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
