The Faculty of Law is one of the country’s leading law schools, and is ranked by Times Higher Education among the top in the world. The Faculty offers a three-year Juris Doctor (JD) degree program, as well as Masters (LLM) and Doctorate (PhD) graduate law degree programs. The Faculty has an outstanding array of award-winning teachers and legal scholars with a wide range of research interests and expertise, and prides itself on maintaining strong connections to the judiciary, the profession, and alumni. Currently, the Faculty is in a period of renewal, having recently hired seven new tenure-track professors, fully a quarter of the overall Faculty complement.
The ideal candidate will be a leading scholar with a graduate degree, appointable at the rank of full professor, who has a proven track record of excellent teaching, research, and professional experience consistent with the expectations of a dean at a world-class research university. The Dean must be capable of demonstrating visionary, innovative, and inclusive leadership, cultivating a vibrant research culture, promoting collegiality and collaboration, and empowering faculty members, staff, and students at the Faculty of Law.
A member of Deans’ Council and a senior academic administrator of the University, the Dean of Law is responsible to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) for all operations of the Faculty, including budget and administrative oversight, pedagogical and scholarly excellence, the Faculty’s research profile, and fund development. The Dean will also build and maintain strong partnerships with external stakeholders, including governments, funding agencies, other universities, and the profession.

This position is in accordance with University terms and conditions, and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will be competitive with public research-intensive post-secondary institutions. Components of compensation will include base salary, a comprehensive benefits package (which can be viewed at www.hrs.ualberta.ca), and additional negotiated benefits applicable to the position.
