Introduction

The DCU Institute of Education is the newest faculty of Dublin City University. It is based in a €70 million purpose built facility on the DCU St Patrick’s Campus in Drumcondra in Dublin. Established in 2016 as Ireland’s first University faculty of Education, it has a staff of more than 140 full-time academics and a student body in excess of 4,000.

The Institute brings together students of education across all sectors from early childhood, to primary and post-primary, and further and higher education. As well as providing a range of undergraduate programmes in education, the Institute offers a rich menu of taught and research-based postgraduate programmes, at doctoral, masters, diploma and certificate levels.

The School of Language, Literacy and Early Childhood Education

The School of Language, Literacy and Early Childhood Education is one of six schools within the DCU Institute of Education. The school contributes to a wide range of education related degrees and courses at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. It brings together a large dynamic faculty with a significant range of expertise in relation to theory, practice, research and policy in the fields of language (Irish & English), literacy and early childhood education. Staff are committed to ongoing scholarship and inquiry in reciprocal partnership with early childhood education and care settings, schools, colleagues across the institute and other stakeholders in the education system.

Assistant Professor Position

The School of Language, Literacy and Early Childhood Education is seeking to recruit two Assistant Professors to work collaboratively as members of the early childhood education team, with a start date on or before 2nd September 2019. The successful candidate will require Garda Vetting. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy the following criteria:

Essential

Postgraduate qualification (s) in early childhood education Teaching experience at primary level

Knowledge and experience of curriculum and pedagogy in the early years of primary education

Knowledge and experience of the relevant national curricula and frameworks pertaining to early childhood education

Doctorate in early childhood education

Teaching and research experience at university level

Knowledge and experience of the field of primary teacher education Competency in Irish language

The post will have a range of responsibilities including but not limited to the following:

Teaching

The candidate will be required to contribute significantly to the development, teaching, assessment and administration of the early childhood education elements of existing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) (Primary), the Professional Master of Education (Primary) (PMEP), the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECE) and Masters programmes in early childhood education as well as related continuing professional development programmes, and new post-graduate programmes as they are developed. This teaching will include module design and delivery and school placement including its attendant duties of supporting and evaluating students on school visits and writing reports. In addition, the candidate is expected to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate theses, contribute to tutorials and to the wider teaching of the Institute as required by the Head of School.

Research

The DCU Institute of Education is a centre of excellence in educational research and as such the candidate will be expected to be research-active in their field and in the general field of teacher education/early childhood teacher education and to contribute to, develop and support research initiatives within the school, the recently launched Early Childhood Research Centre, the first dedicated ECE research centre in Ireland, and the wider faculty. They will contribute to the scholarship and intellectual life of the University, which will enhance its reputation as a research-led teaching institution and which will make a significant contribution to the development of the DCU Institute of Education’s research agenda.

Administration

The candidate will undertake administrative functions related to the activities of the School of Language, Literacy and Early Childhood Education. These activities defined by the Head of School may include participating in School meetings, engaging in meetings related to modules and programmes, representing the School in marketing and recruitment of students, developing relationships with stakeholders, participating in open days, and organisation of conferences and seminars.

Salary Scales

Assistant Professor (Lecturer above bar): €52,188 - €83,039*

Assistant Professor (Lecturer below bar): €39,123 - €53,784*

*Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will be made on the appropriate point of the Lecturer Above Bar or Lecturer Below Bar salary scale in line with current Government pay policy
