Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Pan-Hammarström (PHA)

The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Research group

The research group of Prof. Qiang Pan-Hammarström works on the molecular mechanism of immunoglobulin class switch recombination (CSR), genetics of primary immunodeficiency and B-cell lymphomagenesis. The research laboratory is located at campus Flemingsberg. For more information about the group, please see https://ki.se/en/bionut/research-group-qiang-pan-hammarstrom

Duties

The selected postdoctoral fellow candidate will work in our multidisciplinary team of researchers including clinicians, molecular biologists and bioinformaticians, and will be jointly supervised by Prof. Qiang Pan-Hammarström at Karolinska Institutet (KI) and Prof. Feng Zhang at the Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard. The postdoctoral study will be primary based in KI, but will have possibilities to visit Broad Institute in Cambridge for additional training in technology and bioinformatics.

The main tasks for the successful candidate are:

  1. Characterization of RNA editing events in cells from healthy individuals as well as from disease models using next generation sequencing technologies, with focus on B cell lymphoma and primary immunodeficiency.
  2. Validation of RNA editing events by site-specific modification using the Cas13-based RNA editing system.
  3. Develop new therapeutic approaches based on RNA-editing technologies.
  4. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to assume a major role in the writing of scientific publications and grant applications and contribute to supervise PhD and master students in the group.

Qualifications

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate who are interested in applying new technologies and tools for understanding the mechanisms underlying human diseases and for development of novel therapies for patients. The applicant should have been awarded a PhD or equivalent degree in medicine, biotechnology, immunology, genetics, cancer biology, molecular biology or areas relevant to the announced position.

He/she should have achieved the corresponding scientific competence, with first-authored publications in internationally leading journals in the corresponding fields. Extensive research experience in next generation sequencing data analysis and state-of-art molecular and cellular biology techniques is required. The applicant must be able to work productively via collaborative interactions with team members. Furthermore, the candidate should possess excellent communicating and writing skills in English.

Bases of assessment

We stress scientific excellence and potential when assessing applicants. The applicants’ track record based on curriculum vitae and bibliography will be assessed. Evidence for independence, innovation and the capacity to work and publish in a multidisciplinary environment is weighted in ranking the applicants. Reference letters will be requested from the PhD supervisor(s) and considered from selected candidates.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six-months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including education, date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  • Two recommendation letters, including at least one from the PhD supervisor

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world’s leading medical universities.

Its vision is to significantly contribute to the improvement of human health. Karolinska Institutet accounts for the single largest share of all academic medical research conducted in Sweden and offers the country’s broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences.

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet selects the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

Pursuant to the regulations of the Swedish National Archives, applications are kept on file for two years after the appointment has gained legal force. The regulations do not apply to attachments that have been printed or otherwise published.

Karolinska Institutet strives to provide a workplace that has approximately the same number of women and men, is free of discrimination and offers equal opportunity to everyone.
