We are seeking a Research Specialist D to work in the Cardiovascular Institute at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. The Research Specialist D will oversee day-to-day operations in the lab in an independent and responsible manner. In addition, he/she will assist with the overall project management in an active and vibrant laboratory and will have the opportunity to manage small projects or components of larger research projects. The individual will provide interpretation and analysis of experimental results, troubleshoot problems and develop solutions to technical problems of moderate scope, and other related duties and tasks. Experience and skills in molecular and cellular biology techniques (qRT-PCR, western blotting, and maintenance of primary and transformed cell lines) and the use of small animal models are preferred.
The role of this position also includes overseeing lab inventory, interfacing with vendors and service providers to maintain lab equipment and ensuring lab compliance to all NIH and Penn regulations, and oversight and optimization of lab operations including maintenance of IACUC protocols, chemical inventory, regulatory licenses, and preparation of MTAs prior to shipment of reagents. He/she will help provide supervision and mentorship to lab technicians (including annual evaluations), undergraduate and graduate students, and will act as Hiring Manager for the laboratory.
Position is contingent on continued funding.
Masters Degree with a major in a science field such as chemistry, biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, physics or related field and 3-5 years of hands-on laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. The successful candidate must possess extensive experience in cell culture, molecular and cell biology techniques and previous experience with Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS), qRT-PCR, immunocytochemistry, western blotting, and maintenance of primary and transformed cell lines. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and understand of scientific literature are required. Familiarity with computer programs including MS Office. Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently is necessary. The successful candidate will thrive in a team environment and is eager to learn new methodologies.
