The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is one of the foremost centres for fundamental research on the Earth system to secure safer and more sustainable societies. Its location in Southeast Asia, where growing populations face myriad natural hazards and developing climate challenges, mean the EOS’s work is more critical and visible than ever before.

Founded in 2008 as an autonomous research centre of Nanyang Technological University, and as part of Singapore’s Research Centre of Excellence initiative, the EOS builds intellectual leadership on Earth systems, including our understanding of geohazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and climate change, particularly in and around Southeast Asia.

Following the foundational tenure of Professor Kerry Sieh, the EOS has established itself as a leader in its field. The next Director will build upon this platform to the advancement of EOS, in line with its founding mission to drive excellence in research and intellectual leadership, and as a connected part of NTU, both leverage and support the University in related fields.

The next Director will be an internationally leading scholar in a relevant field as well as a visionary leader, with a global outlook and the ability and desire to build deep and strong relationships across and outside the community with a diverse group of stakeholders and potential partners. Motivated to enhance the impact of the EOS, they will work to diversify funding sources and to support the impact of the EOS through informing policy, engaging with industry, local and regional government, and other stakeholders involved in helping the region build resilience against natural hazards and climate change.

The Selection Committee will be supported in this appointment process by the executive search firm Perrett Laver.
