About the position

A Postdoctoral Researcher position is available at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) within the Refrigeration research group on the topic of "Advanced integrated R744 heat pump technologies for apartment blocks". The appointment has a duration of four years.

The Refrigeration research group has a well-established network, and expertise with regard to vapour compression systems applying natural working fluids for various applications within different industrial sectors. In close cooperation with SINTEF, the group is involved in several national and international research projects.

The Head of Department is Professor Terese Løvås. The position reports to Professor Armin Hafner.

Main duties and responsibilities

The scope of the postdoctoral work is the development of various integrated heat pump units applying natural working fluids for small apartment blocks, in close cooperation with leading European partners. The main research and project work will be performed together with other members of refrigeration group, including researchers and master students, thereby contributing to achieve the goals and prepare the deliverables of the project. The tasks in which the Postdoctoral Researcher will be involved are as follows:

  • Review of the regulatory framework and standards/norms connected to heat pumps and heat pump installations
  • Design of heat pump prototypes running with natural refrigerants (analysis of layouts, selection of components, etc.)
  • Develop Modelica based numerical models of heat pumps and installations and simulate the different designs and architectures accounting for various types of heating / cooling demands, heat sources, types of energy distribution and thermal energy storage
  • Contribute to the analysis of data from the different experimental campaigns at partner institutions. Use these data for validation of the numerical models
  • Define heat pump control strategies from a theoretical point of view

Qualification requirements

We seek a highly motivated candidate with a PhD degree within refrigeration and heat pumping technologies. Background knowledge in use of Modelica programming language is required. The candidate should present a strong interest in the modelling and simulation of complex multi-physical systems including heat and mass transfer. The candidate has to be able to perform the above-mentioned simulations based on previous documented experience. Expertise and experience from laboratory work related to refrigeration and heat pump systems applying R744 are required. Excellent English skills, spoken and written, are required. Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

A postdoctoral research fellowship is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant.

Salary and conditions

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated from NOK 515, 200 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 4 years.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
