You will conduct experimental research funded by the Australian Research Council Discovery project "Rational design of new synthetic antifreeze molecules for cryopreservation". This exciting experimental program has a number of aspects which include: studying the interactions of cryoprotectants with membranes using Small Angle X-ray and Neutron Scattering (SAXS/SANS) and Neutron Membrane Diffraction, measurement of the permeability of biological cells, conducting cryopreservation trials and determining the thermal properties of solutions using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The research fellow is expected to contribute significantly to several of these aspects, but the specific direction of the project will be determined by the background and expertise of the successful candidate.
You will carry out research in conjunction with a team at RMIT University combining experimental, theoretical and simulation studies, as well as a synthetic chemistry team from the University of New England. Knowledge of one of these areas is an advantage but is not necessary. The research to be conducted will have a significant impact in expanding our understanding of the physical mechanisms of cryoprotection, and will be published in high quality international journals. It also has the potential to lead to new, novel cryoprotectants.
Skills & Experience Required
You will have:
- An emerging track record and recognition for quality research outputs which will contribute to existing Discipline and School research areas evidenced by high quality research publications. Evidence of the development of new research initiatives, competitive research funding and/or relevant industry links will be an advantage
- Experience in at least one of the following areas: X-ray or neutron scattering in soft matter; cell culture and imaging; cryopreservation; thermal properties of soft materials
- A completed PhD in Physics, Biophysics, Physical Chemistry or related fields
