The McLaughlin lab in the Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology is seeking a 50% FTE Life Science Research Professional 1 (LSRP 1), who is excited and motivated to aid in an ongoing research project investigating human adipose tissue structure and function with a specific focus on how dysregulation of normal adipocyte physiology may contribute to an individual’s predisposition to insulin resistance. We are seeking a LSRP 1 to help collect, process, and manage human adipose and blood samples from participants undergoing clinical research trials related to obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes.

Research responsibilities will involve processing human adipose tissue and subsequent analysis for such parameters as cell size distribution, gene expression, and histological examination. Primary culture of adipocytes and stromal cells will also be derived from this tissue and assessed for various criteria. Additionally, this position will require analysis of human blood components for various protein and metabolic markers using EIA, RIA, and enzymatic assays.

This position will require troubleshooting and refinement of current protocols as well as development of new methods. Data will be analyzed, interpreted, and presented to the lab work force. Literature will be reviewed to maintain an understanding of the current state of related research findings and techniques. The LSRP will participate in preparation of papers for publication, and there will be opportunities for co-authorship and first authorship. The LSRP will oversee the general operation of the lab, including maintaining lab supplies, freezers, managing chemical inventory, sample inventory and retrieval, updating written protocols and workflow diagrams, and descriptive data preparation from results of laboratory tests.

Duties include:

  • Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.
