Office of Career and Professional Development

The Career Development Office (CDO)  at Michigan Ross serves alumni and 800 full-time day Master of Business Administration degree students (MBAs), 500 Part-time MBA students, 100 Master of Accounting students (MAccs), 80 Master of Management (MM) students, 55 Master of Supply Chain Management students, and 2,500 Bachelor’s degree students (BBAs) each year by providing a complete range of workshops and coaching services and by maintaining recruiter relationships and coordinating on-campus interviews and off-campus job postings.

Purpose

The Industry Manager will work with all relevant communities and constituents, including prospective and current employers, corporate partners, degree program offices, prospective and current students from multiple degree programs (undergraduate and graduate), and alumni to cultivate student interest and preparedness for a group of specified industries. This role will focus mainly on the Consulting industry but may also work with energy, non-profit and other industries as assigned. Drawing on recruiting expertise, the Industry Manager will consult with corporate partners to develop a robust positioning plan to promote student interest in and through a set of thoughtfully integrated experiences and engagement with the organization. To accomplish these objectives, this role is charged with staying abreast of hiring trends within their industries in order to develop programming in support of the trends; guiding club leadership in the delivery of information and data to support students interested in those areas; and tracking emerging trends in student career interests in order to attract new organizations and career opportunities to meet these needs.

This role will report to the Senior Associate Director, Employer Relations.  This person will also partner with other Ross departments (alumni relations, action-based learning, executive education) and student clubs to grow the portfolio of companies who recruit at Ross.

Employer Relations and Strategy

  • Conceptualize, develop, and refine student engagement opportunities and recruiting strategies for corporate partners and content to students regarding assigned areas, working with clubs when appropriate.
  • Draws on industry/functional knowledge, trends, and professional networks to guide relevant programming and advance the exchange of knowledge between the students and alumni, recruiters, faculty, or other subject matter experts to enable student success.
  • Collaborate with corporate partners in order to ensure programming is consistent with their needs and expectations.
  • Collect feedback from employers regarding the strengths and opportunities of Ross candidates compared to other institutions; share this feedback with internal constituents (career coaches, degree program offices) so they may enhance student outcomes moving forward.
  • Maintain knowledge of recruitment practices, industry trends, faculty research, alumni base, student clubs, and student needs so as to remain vital and credible for advising purposes and to appropriately incorporate Ross alumni and/or other guests into workshops/ programs.
  • Interface with corporate recruiters who visit campus via lunches, corporate presentations, club events and meetings.

Student Preparedness

  • Advise and partner with designated student career clubs, collaborating with club leadership to create and provide high impact, high-quality career programming reaching major student audiences. Entails meeting with club leaders, and attending key club events/ conferences and aligning career messaging across club/ non-club audiences.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for industry trends and company feedback. Present and provide knowledge and data to students and student groups to support learnings. Create/revise/refresh content relevant to assigned industry.
  • Create, develop, and oversee the execution of student events that support the recruiting efforts in designated industries. These may include treks, conferences, workshops, etc.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and feedback to students on successful practices for recruiting in designated industries.
  • Partner with several industry and/or functional student clubs to plan and deliver career-development related programming
  • Provide individual coaching on job-search strategies for designated industries
  • Build long term relationships with students and alumni and facilitate networking among students and alumni/contacts within designated industry

Business Development

Consistent with current and emerging corporate and student needs and expectations:

  • Identify opportunities and contact / visit current corporate partners to share and explore additional opportunities to place Ross students (might they recruit with another degree program?) or broaden the number of opportunities.
  • Proactively and independently identify and engage new companies to encourage them to recruit Ross students.
  • Reach out to alumni corporate recruiters or representatives for expertise and to identify opportunities for synergistic connections.
  • Remain in contact with key corporate partners to stay abreast of current and future human capital needs and expectations.
  • Promote Ross programs and students at industry conferences and events.

Supervision

  • Select, supervise, develop and evaluate assigned staff; establish and model performance expectations and standards to foster a positive, high-service, and innovative culture. Provide leadership for the training and motivation of staff in order to make full use of individual capabilities and to meet the department’s growth and demands.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years’ experience working in recruiting, higher-education, or a related field that involves serving multiple constituents or equivalent combination of education and related experience required
  • Proven ability to coach, mentor, and guide students
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstration of practices and procedures associated with building and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of internal and external constituencies
  • Demonstrated effectiveness and success working with student populations
  • Advanced knowledge of issues of concern in higher education
  • Proven ability to successfully interact with a diverse group of people
  • Excellent communication skills, diplomacy, discretion, and presentation skills
  • Patience and ability to respond clearly and calmly in demanding circumstances
  • Team-oriented, flexible and customer-service oriented manner
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the institution to a wide range of audiences, including executives, donors, faculty, and school leadership
  • Ability to quickly and appropriately identify, address, and mitigate unforeseen and/or rapidly unfolding events that may negatively impact relationships between the campus and various constituencies, keeping senior management appropriately advised and notified.
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills, including skills to plan and implement successful events
  • Ability to use data to gain insights and make decisions
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft office, google suite, and databases

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in Business, Student Affairs, or related area
  • Previous recruiting and/or career coaching experience
