Location: Clayton campus

Appointment Type & Remuneration: The successful applicant will be appointed at the level and appointment type, appropriate to their qualifications, experience and in accordance with the relevant classification standards

The Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music is seeking enthusiastic scholars of music to join our team.

We are seeking expressions of interest across Level B, C, D in classical music performance and composition, as well as a Professor of Music role.

The Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music is a vibrant school of around 500 students in the Faculty of Arts. Monash University was ranked 16th worldwide for the Performing Arts in the 2019 QS rankings, and is part of the Group of Eight Australian Universities as well as Australia’s largest university. The school offers undergraduate programs in classical, jazz, improvisation and popular music performance, composition and music technology, musicology and ethnomusicology. We offer a Bachelor of Music, a Music major in the Bachelor of Arts and several double degrees, as well as music streams in the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy programs.

The school has a focus on music in Australia, where both music making in Australia and its association with the rest of the world are an important emphasis for our teaching and research. The school prides itself on contemporary music pedagogies that prepare musicians for the future world of music; a collaborative, polystylistic, fast changing, digitally supported environment where music is a central and essential component of life. We focus on contemporary practice whilst ensuring we cover foundational studies in performance technique as well as contextual and historical studies. We also encourage cross fertilisation across different music disciplines through our chamber music and small ensemble programs.

The school works closely with the MLive in the management of the Monash Academy Orchestra and concert series in the new Ian Potter Centre for the Performing Arts, a venue that features two Meyer Constellation sound systems and a Jazz club. The school is the home to the internationally acclaimed Music Archive of Monash University (MAMU), which hosts a remarkable collection of musical instruments, recordings and other ephemera from around the world. It is also home to the award winning Monash Art Ensemble, a polystylistic group focusing on the nexus of improvisation and notation

Our research encompasses both traditional and non-traditional outputs, and engages with music communities worldwide. Our overarching focus on Australian music informs our strengths and international research partnerships in musical biography, digital notation, improvisation, street music and music of Asia, and we grow artistic researchers by encouraging our undergraduate performance students to engage with exegetical approaches to writing from their first year. Some of this research is rendered in the award-winning Monash Art Ensemble, a polystylistic performance research project focusing on the nexus of improvisation and notation, the Monash Academy Orchestra and the Monash Animated Notation Ensemble, focusing on digital music notation possibilities.

Our department values equity and diversity and promotes an inclusive workplace culture for staff irrespective of their gender identity, ethnicity or cultural background. We recognise that diversity drives excellence and innovation in research and teaching.
