The ANU is launching a major new project on Humanising Machine Intelligence (HMI), uniting computer scientists, philosophers, and social scientists in pursuit of a more ethical future for AI and Machine Learning (hmi.anu.edu.au).

Position Overview

The Project and Operations Manager, Humanising Machine Intelligence, is responsible for the strategic and operational management of the HMI Grand Challenge, and for working closely with the Executive to comply with the guidance of the Grand Challenge Governance Board. They will report to the Project Lead, Seth Lazar.

The Projects and Operations Manager will provide high level strategic advice to support decisions of the project’s Executive Committee, and work together with the Executive and Project Lead to: attract external funding; establish and manage key internal and external partnerships; monitor program performance, financial commitments, and HR requirements; and ensure effective communication and high-impact work by the project team. They will be an active partner with the HMI team in developing the next generation of ethical machine intelligence.

The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) is one of seven Colleges at ANU.  The College, which is structured into two main research schools, offers degrees in more than 20 discipline areas and excels in research across the creative arts, humanities and social sciences.  The College has a substantial international research presence and is a major source of national policy advice. Our academic staff are internationally recognised for their research, and 46 are members of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, the Academy of the Social Sciences of Australia, or both. We also host 13 Australian Research Council Future Fellows and two ARC Laureates. A hub of vibrant activity, we host more than 1000 lectures, concerts and exhibitions each year, most of which are open to the public. Our students, staff and graduates come from more than 60 nations, bringing a diversity of perspective to campus life.
