Division of the Vice Provost for University Life (VPUL) is Penn’s foremost provider of student services and educational access. The Director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, in the Division of the Vice Provost for University Life, has executive responsibility for the leadership of Penn’s historic fraternity and sorority system and for ensuring that Greek chapter members are deeply engaged in the Penn community. The Penn Greek system is comprised of more than 40 recognized chapters, nearly 3,000 members, and more than 30 chapter houses both on campus, and in the surrounding West Philadelphia neighborhood. The fraternity and sorority community encompasses students, alumni, staff, faculty, and external partners.
The Director is responsible for all components of fraternity and sorority life including member recruitment and retention; social events, philanthropic endeavors, and leadership training; housing (when applicable); individual, chapter and governing council advisement; internal and external communications. When necessary, the Director oversees the imposition of organizational discipline with partners including the Division of Public Safety, the Office of Student Conduct, and Alcohol and
Other Drug Program Initiatives. The Director oversees a staff of three Associate Directors, Administrative Coordinator, Finance Specialist, Program Assistant, and two Graduate Assistants. The Director has overall responsibility for all staff recruitment, training, operations, and budgeting.
The Director must establish and maintain an active, highly-visible, and deeply-engaged presence in the organizations and activities across the Penn Greek system. The Director also is expected to sustain and grow strong, collaborative relationships with all inter/national offices and chapter alumni/ae advisory boards, and to communicate often with parents and family members. The Director must work confidently and collaboratively in high-profile and emergent situations, with VPUL departments (especially Alcohol and Other Drug Program Initiatives, Penn Violence Prevention, Student Intervention Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, the Student Health Service, and Communications) and campus partners (including the Division of Public Safety, the Office of Student Conduct, Facilities and Real Estate Services (FRES), Campus Apartments, four undergraduate schools, and Penn Global).
A Master’s Degree is required with at least 10 years of executive experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous director-level
experience at the university level is strongly preferred. Must have demonstrated experience working with diverse students, as individuals and as organizations, across
many dimensions including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, interests, perspectives, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Must have exemplary administrative
experience including the recruitment, supervision, and professional development of staff; oversight of a departmental personnel, operations, and gift budgets; and
demonstrated experience working within an academic, rigorous and complex university organization.
Prospective candidates must also possess a familiarity with the educational goals and the social needs of fraternities/sororities; a strong background in leadership development; expertise in program design and implementation, and superb oral, written, and digital communications skills. Beneficial skills include deep knowledge of judicial oversight and precept of student self-governance; knowledge of the structure, policies and protocols of the national fraternal coalitions (NPC, NIC, NPHC, NALFO, NAPA), particularly as they relate to campus organizational oversight; the ability to relate to all segments of the University community; an understanding of corporate relationships and the role of alumni within a large private University environment; the ability to handle multiple projects in a highly-complex, fast-paced, environment; a strong aptitude for public relations and comfort communicating with student and external media, and an abiding sense of humor. Fraternity or sorority membership and experience is strongly encouraged.
