JOSEPH WHARTON, FOUNDER
In 1881, American entrepreneur and industrialist Joseph Wharton established the world’s first collegiate school of business at the University of Pennsylvania.
Wharton’s pioneering vision was to produce graduates who would become ‘pillars of the state, whether in private or in public life.’ The Wharton School maintains a long tradition of educating visionary business leaders in academia, business, government, and not-for-profit organizations.

Leadership and general management of the Penn Wharton Entrepreneurship organization, which will be responsible for operating the Venture Lab at Tangen Hall (opening Summer 2020). The Venture Lab houses most student-facing entrepreneurial resources at the University, including the Start-Up Challenge, the VIP programs, the Innovation Fund, the Weiss Tech Hub, and several maker labs operated by the School of Engineering. Providing a public-facing presence for entrepreneurship at Penn, including advocacy for entrepreneurial education, and liaison to the media covering entrepreneurship. Fundraising in collaboration with Wharton External Affairs and Penn Alumni Relations, meeting frequently with donor prospects and taking a leadership role in major fundraising campaigns. Strategic planning and oversight for a newly configured Snider Center, which will focus on the needs of Philadelphia-based technology-based ventures. Liaison and coordination with Penn faculty instructors in the area of entrepreneurship, and with other units at Penn broadly concerned with innovation and entrepreneurship, including the Pennovation organization. Oversee planning and implementation of alumni events and resources, including entrepreneurship award events in San Francisco and China, and alumni mentoring programs. Manage alumni Advisory Board, including board membership pipeline. Oversee communications, board meetings, board subcommittees, and any other priorities pertaining to the board. Administrative oversight of supporting operations including: information technology, financial operations, and CRM systems. Dotted-line oversight of the Tangen Hall building and facilities management staff. Dotted-line oversight of staff members managing several maker labs within the Venture Lab.Management of a team of approximately 5 direct reports and 15 indirect and dotted-line reports. Primary location is Philadelphia, with some staff located at the Wharton San Francisco campus.Oversight of a $3mm+ operating budget.
Position requires regular domestic and international travel. Position is contingent upon funding.
A Bachelor’s Degree and over 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Master’s Degree preferred. Experience in higher education preferred. Demonstrated interest in entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial education. Prior entrepreneurship experience helpful but not required. Ability to lead teams and supervise others. Excellent administrative skills including the ability to establish objectives, measure impact, set performance expectations, and organize complex projects. Strong written and oral communications skills. Position requires the ability to work evenings and weekends as required periodically for programmatic events and activities. Position also requires regular domestic travel and occasional international travel.
