Teaching and Learning Assistant

The George Mason University Libraries seeks a enthusiastic and self-motivated Teaching and Learning Assistant (T&L Assistant) to provide face-to-face and online library instruction, research and reference support, as well as outreach assistance for the Teaching and Learning Team.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for supporting Mason’s core mission of teaching, learning, and research. The T&L Assistant will teach information literacy skills in the classroom, online, during one-on-one consultations, and in virtual and face-to-face workshops. They will provide research assistance using basic, complex, and specialized print and online research resources, tools, and software to provide accurate, prompt, and thorough information. They will also support outreach initiatives of the Teaching and Learning Team through orientations and events to describe and promote library services and programs.

Applicants must have the ability to provide in-class and online instruction for general and subject-based courses; teach research skills through workshops and individual consultations; provide reference and research assistance to library users; conduct research presentations; collaborate with library units as well as other Mason offices; and assist with the promotion of library services.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent library experience
Library public services experience, particularly in instruction and user services programs, marketing, and outreach
Proficiency with print and electronic information sources, automated library systems, online library catalogs, electronic databases, and Internet
Understanding of the function and role of academic libraries in higher education
Demonstrated project and library information service experience
Demonstrated individual and group instruction/teaching skills with some knowledge and use of current instructional technologies, for distance and residential education
Effective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
Able to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, production and service-oriented environment
Strong and will-developed service orientation and understanding of functional work and its impact on other library units as well as the user community
Able to lead and coordinate team projects, including motivating others
Aptitude for accurate and detail-oriented work
Able to remain calm, negotiate fairly and rationally and exercise sound judgment under time pressure or in emotionally charged situations
Ability to share knowledge effectively with others, both within and outside of the Teaching and Learning Team

Familiarity with national and international professional standards, principles, and best practices relating to academic libraries, user services, instruction, research, etc.
Proficiency with current course management software, web authoring tools, multimedia creation tools, library instructional tools, citation management tools, social media, etc.
Experience supervising, training, and mentoring other staff members and/or student employees
Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office
Able to troubleshoot hardware and software issues

Academic library experience
