This position has two equal components. The first component includes providing research support in the Circulating Tumor Material laboratory, and the second component research support for medical oncologists and clinical research coordinators in the cancer clinics.
Research Specialist B:
Laboratory (50%): In the lab, the position will support various cancer studies by performing sample receiving, processing, storage, and shipment to study collaborators. This individual will assist in conducting experiments aimed at interrogating patient samples to optimize approaches for the isolation and evaluation of circulating tumor material. The candidate will record samples and results in the study databases, conduct preliminary analysis, and prepare summary figures, and text for manuscripts. The individual will also assist the other research specialist in the daily functions of the laboratory. Responsibilities will also include some administrative duties such as inventory and ordering of lab supplies, monitoring and calibration of equipment, and organization of data collected on clinical samples. This cutting edge work will be done in a highly collaborative manner together with other Penn laboratories, physician scientists in the Penn School of Medicine, and industry partners. No animal research.
Clinic (50%): In the clinic, the candidate will provide research support for various cancer studies by assisting the oncologists and clinical research coordinators with initiating and conducting participant screening and recruitment. The candidate will also coordinate with clinical teams to arrange the study participants’ procedures essential to both the clinical and research procedures. The candidate will attend the procedures to procure study specimens and will be responsible for data entry into various databases including but not limited to REDCap, VELOS, and Excel. The candidate will have the primary role in the abstraction of medical record information from subject’s electronic medical records, interviews and/or questionnaires for entry into the study research databases, and actively track all enrolled study participants for follow up. The Research Specialist C will also independently design study databases and perform database quality-control. Given the highly collaborative nature of this work and the need for coordination with multiple clinical trial investigators, excellent organization and communication skills are critical.
Research Specialist C – in addition to the above duties, the Research Specialist C will also:
- independently develop, design, and optimize new flow cytometry assay;
- independently recruit and enroll patients on clinical studies for the flow cytometry assay;
- independently run patient bio-specimens on optimized flow cytometry assay.
Research Specialist B: Bachelor’s degree and at least 1-3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Proficiency in some of the skills listed above, including clinical research coordination, is highly desirable. Computer proficiency, with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and REDCap is preferred. Previous experience with EPIC and chart abstraction preferred. Experience with tissue culture and blood processing, including serum, plasma, and buffy coat, is preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology is a plus. The candidate is expected to be self-motivated and have the skill and confidence to work independently. Excellent communication, analytical, computer, and organizational skills are essential, as well as keen attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced work environment. Research Specialist C: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master’s degree a plus. Previous experience performing circulating tumor material assays. Previous experience as a clinical research coordinator independently recruiting, enrolling, and consenting study participants.
