The Faculty’s research is organised around a range of centres and disciplinary clusters. In this role, you would be leading the Cyber Security research stream in the Allens Hub for Technology, Law and Innovation. The Hub is an independent community of scholars based at UNSW Sydney. As a partnership between Allens and UNSW Law, the hub adds breadth and depth to research on the diverse interactions among technological change, law, and legal practice.

About Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre (CSCRC)

The CSCRC has been funded for 7 years by the Commonwealth Government’s Cooperative Research Centres Program and has also attracted significant funding from its participants. The CSCRC is an industry-driven collaboration to create and enhance Australian cyber security capability. With two research programs, ‘Critical Infrastructure Security’ and ‘Cyber Security Solutions as a Service’, the CSCRC will deliver innovative research, education and training outcomes that solve core challenges for public and private sector partners, with flow on effects for broader industry and community. The CRC Program supports industry-led collaborations between industry, researchers and the community.

About the role

  • Level A: $75,069 – $100,090 plus 17% superannuation and leave loading
  • Level B: $105,108 - $123,908 plus 17% superannuation and leave loading
  • Level C1: $127,663 plus 17% superannuation and leave loading
  • 2 year fixed-term appointment
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

This role is funded by CSCRC and will work closely with CSCRC to develop and engage in high quality, impactful research projects that contribute to cyber security in Australia. The role will focus on law and policy as applied to a wide range of cyber security challenges.  

The position reports to the Director, Allens Hub for Technology, Law and Innovation and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

Level A

  • Supporting and developing research initiatives in consultation with the supervisor in the area of cyber security law and policy.
  • Conducting literature reviews and analysis and contributing to high quality academic publications
  • Preparing reports, presentations and manuscripts for an expert audience and peer review.

Level B (in addition to the above)

  • Preparing abstracts and grant applications
  • Supervising of honours theses and HDR students (to extent permitted under university rules)
  • Disseminating research results through writing of high-quality articles and reports for well-regarded journals and progress reporting to other researchers and industry partners

Level C1 (in addition to the above

  • Leading research and projects in the area of cyber security law and policy
  • Designing, developing and delivering outcomes measurements, as well as delivering workshops to industry partners, if necessary
  • Building and maintaining new partnerships and collaborations and contributing to business development activities

Specific requirements include:

Level A

  • Either
    • PhD (or equivalent doctoral-level qualification) in Law or undergraduate/JD degree in Law with a PhD in a related discipline, or
    • An undergraduate/JD degree in Law plus at least 5 years’ experience in a role, at least some of which involved engaging with and advising on legal, regulatory and/or policy issues around cyber security, critical systems, technology projects, data protection, or similar
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and the ability to write for both legal and non-legal audiences
  • Ability to work independently as a member of an interdisciplinary team and be responsive to clear deadlines
  • Must be eligible to apply for an Australian Government Security Clearance

Level B (in addition to the above)

  • High level qualitative research and demonstrated excellence in publishing in leading journals relevant to cyber security
  • Strong track record of high-quality publications and conference presentations
  • Ability to maintain a sound governance framework for research activities and ensure appropriate ethics approval, reporting and documentation of research outcomes.
  • Well-developed written, verbal and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with academics across various disciplines, students and industry partners

Level C1 (in addition to the above)

  • A strong track record of publications in relevant well-respected peer-review journals, attracting competitive research grants and funding
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop and lead evaluation research and measurement of outcomes
  • Proven experience at effectively leading research projects and managing and developing research teams
