The Faculty of Science teaches approximately 7000 full-time student equivalents, with an academic staff of approximately 500 and general staff of 300. The Faculty is one of the largest and most complex faculties of UNSW Sydney. It comprises the Schools of Aviation, Biological Earth and Environmental Science (BEES), Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS), Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Mathematics and Statistics, Optometry and Vision Science (OVS), Psychology, and Physics. It also includes several major Research Centres and field stations.

About the role

  • $105K - $123K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 2 years
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

Working within the Faculty of Science this EF role will act as the Associate Director of the newly approved Postgraduate Programs Professional Master of Science, Graduate Diploma of Science and Graduate Certificate of Science. This position will also be responsible as the convenor of some of the core courses within the Program and their subject matter.

The role of Lecturer reports to the Deputy Dean Education within the Faculty of Science and has sessional tutors as direct reports as appropriate.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Manage the Program administration, program coordination and provision of program related advice to students for the Professional Master of Science, Graduate Diploma of Science and Graduate Certificate of Science. Work closely with University, Faculty and School staff contributing to the courses offered within these programs.
  • Act as the Course Convenor for the core courses to the above programs and specifically be responsible for the development and subject matter for the:
    • Advanced Science Communication Course
    • Work Integrated Learning and related Project Courses
    • Other core courses where background is appropriate to coordinate
  • Work closely with Faculty and Schools contributing to the course offerings within the Professional Masters of Science and associate programs.
  • Develop a well-defined teaching philosophy which inspires student learning.
  • Conduct tutorials/lectures and supervision of students in both postgraduate classes in line with this philosophy.
  • Prepare and deliver lectures, seminars and/or tutorials using a range of approaches as required: face-to-face, blended and online.
  • Initiate and lead, with support from senior academics, the development of innovative approaches to teaching and learning. This may include blended and/or online teaching as well as curriculum development.
  • Manage course administration, course co-ordination, provision of course related advice to students, and conduct assessment of procedures and examinations.
  • Support the progress of students; provide consultation to students; mark assignments, mid-session and final examinations as allocated by the Faculty.
  • Effectively use qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate and improve student learning. Implement evidence-based quality improvements in educational practice.
  • Provide mentoring for sessional staff in teaching practice and inspire a collegial and collaborative educational culture.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience and expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability for teaching and curriculum development at the postgraduate level.
  • Demonstrated experience using blended/online teaching and implementing educational technologies and innovations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the research basis for teaching and learning in higher education and a demonstrated ability to use research led approaches to develop course materials and deliver discipline specific courses to enhance the student experience and outcomes.
  • A track record of, or demonstration of a trajectory of, quality teaching and learning research publications and grant funding. Demonstrated excellence in educational quality and the use of quantitative and qualitative data for course improvements and design.
  • Demonstrated capability to enhance student learning and career-focused education including work integrated learning.
  • Outstanding leadership abilities, self-management and project management skills.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to support and inspire with staff and students from diverse backgrounds and support Student Equity Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
