Primary Function of Organizational Unit     

The Security Applications and Technologies (SAT) department directs all aspects of current and emerging security technologies for the University. This includes NCSU departments, corporate partners and tenants located on NC State’s Raleigh, as well as on remote campuses and sites. The breadth of these responsibilities includes oversight of campus policy, capital funds, systems administration, technology research, installation/construction and maintenance of the various physical security systems. Specifically, SAT supports the following technologies: CCTV, Door Access systems, Duress and Alert systems, Intercoms, and other Life Safety systems.

Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of the IT System Administrator I role is to provide system management, troubleshooting, administration and maintenance for all IT related Systems that fall within the SAT domain. Including audio, video, networking and voice systems that are used in a security system role on campus. Secondary purposes include ensuring compliance with all PCI requirements related to connected systems, system documentation, OIT network integration/handoff, Windows System management using SCCM and Active Directory object management.

  • Application Support and Configuration:
    • Enterprise application installations,configuration and troubleshooting including campus-wide security platforms and modules
    • Database server installation, configuration and troubleshooting including SQLServer, MySQL, and Mongo databases.
    • Application server and database backups including deployment, configuration and operations of application server backup engines and DB agents such as Netbackup, Barracuda or similar
    • File Integrity Management and application security and integrity through deployment and operation of tools and techniques such as Tripwire, Splunk or similar
    • Configuring and deploying web servers and services
    • Audit and corrective actions on application logs and errors
    • Knowledge and support of the departmental Net environment
  • Systems Administration:
    • Windows and Linux Operating System Administration including File system management and security
    • Physical server configuration – racking servers, cable management, power management, decommissioning.
    • Network Administration for SAT Managed network including firewall management, routing, switch configuration, remote VPNs. Position functions as the primary liaison to OIT – CommTech for SAT related in support of IP equipment.
    • Manages the suite of configuration,deployment and lifecycle management tools for application and client deployment automation including SCCM, Puppet, Forman, Ansible etc.
    • Management of full system recovery and bare-metal backups
  • Active Directory:
    • Deploys and operates system monitoring and network monitoring tools including OpenNMS, Nagios etc.
    • Managed large numbers of servers using client side configuration and systems management using tools such as WIndows Deployment Services/SCCM.
    • IPA Administration
  • Campus-Wide IT Initiatives – Operations:
    • Participates as the SAT departmental representative to multiple IT governance groups and committees including Wolftech AD, IT Security, LAN admin, Network Administrators, PCI etc.
  • Desktop Configuration Management:
    • Configure and Deploy desktops/laptops
    • Management of Security and Compliance related to Endpoint Protection Standards

Minimum Education/Experience     

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in enterprise system administration or a closely related area; or an associates degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Engineering Technology, or Network Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of experience in enterprise system administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Departmental Required Skills

  • Mastery of Windows Server/ Active Directory environments including Windows Deployment Services/SCCM and .Net environments.
  • Command of application security techniques, OS and application log audit, file system configuration.
  • Understanding of IT Security and Security & Compliance Compliance requirements for PCI-DSS, DMCA, FERPA and HIPAA as it relates to System administration and implementation.
  • Network systems understanding of service technologies including managed DHCP, OSI network layers, VLANs, MPLS, VRF, PXE Boot, QOS, COS, DNS and IPAM.
  • Proficiency with scripting technologies such as powershell, python, bash or similar.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to individuals on varying levels of understanding. Ability to work closely with customers across the organization to assess needs and provide solutions.
  • Exemplary time management and project management skills

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education     

  • Experience with enterprise virtualization environments such as Vsphere, Hyper V or KVM based virtualization platforms.
  • Windows and Linux Operating System Administration including File system management and security
  • Application server and database backups including deployment, configuration and operations of application server backup engines and DB agents such as Netbackup, Barracuda or similar
  • Application integration with databases including MySQL, SQL Server or similar
  • Experience with system monitoring and network monitoring tools including OpenNMS, Nagios etc.
  • Proficiency with system recovery tools and bare-metal backups
  • File Integrity Management and application security and integrity through deployment and operation of tools and techniques such as Tripwire, Splunk or similar
  • Experience with physical server configuration – racking servers, cable management, power management, decommissioning
  • Technical certifications and/or coursework in areas such as CCNA, MCP, MCITP or similar
  • NC State IT Domain knowledge
