The College of Sciences at Massey University is seeking to appoint a senior academic (Professor) to lead the School of Fundamental Sciences. The School (previously Institute) was formed on 1 January 2019 from the merger of the Institute of Fundamental Science and the Computer Sciences / Information Technology cluster from the former School of Engineering and Advanced Technology. There is an analogous school, the School of Natural and Computational Sciences, that is located on the Auckland campus of Massey University.

As the Head of School of Fundamental Sciences, you will provide effective leadership and strategic management of the School within the framework of the College’s strategic plan. Additionally, you will contribute to the mission and strategic objectives of the whole College as a member of the College’s Executive Team.

To be successful in this role you will have a doctoral degree with an excellent research record of accomplishment in research and teaching, international standing in a relevant discipline, and a strong commitment to academic excellence in the fundamental sciences.

You will co-contribute to the mission and strategic objectives of the whole College as an active member of the Executive Committee of the College of Science, promoting a coordinated approach to delivering innovative strategic academic development. You will have the leadership skills, ambition and creativity to take forward the development and delivery of the School’s academic strategy and objectives. You will thrive on working collaboratively in a dynamic environment to enhance the reputation of the School with a focus on quality and excellence. You will be taking on a significant and complex leadership role in the College, and must be able to lead with a clear vision, engaging others across the School, Faculty and University.

Also essential are excellent communication and relationship management skills across all levels, and the ability to engage successfully with external stakeholders. You will skillfully drive research performance across a range of disciplines, developing contemporary learning and teaching environments that enhance the student experience. You will also demonstrate an awareness and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and an ability to embrace and lead both the College and University’s strategy in relevant and practical ways.

Reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Sciences, this is a permanent professorial appointment to the College. The appointment to Head of School of Fundamental Sciences will be for a fixed period of five years, with the potential to negotiate an extension at the end of that period, or revert to the permanent professorial position.

Your application will include your current Curriculum Vitae, referee names and contact details and a covering letter addressing the key responsibilities and person specifications, and aligning them with your capabilities. Late applications will not be accepted, as shortlisting will commence soon after the closing date. If successfully shortlisted, you will be required to give a presentation to staff and a formal selection panel interview will follow.
