Job Summary

Michigan Medicine recently established a new collaborative initiative, the Translational Tissue Modeling Laboratory (TTML). The laboratory provides the research community with access to a diverse range of human tissues grown in long-term tissue culture, which will enable discovery-based research, and personalized and regenerative medicine approaches to treat human disease.  The major goal of the Laboratory is to provide cutting edge, enabling technologies to the University of Michigan research and clinical community. The TTML is expanding and is seeking an experienced laboratory specialist.  

The candidate will use their scientific skills, biological knowledge and creativity to develop and apply cutting edge techniques to develop complex tissue culture models. The candidate will also use skills and experience in laboratory management to run day-to-day operations of the laboratory, manage budgets, oversee interactions with clinicians, interface with investigators for project development, consultation, and train/teach advanced tissue culture techniques. The successful candidate should have a track record in laboratory management, outstanding interpersonal skills, working with advanced molecular biology tools and tissue culture methods.

Responsibilities*

  • Laboratory management will include but not be limited to:  oversee day-to-day operations of the laboratory, lab supply ordering, personnel scheduling, maintenance of detailed records/procedures, and maintenance of regulatory compliance documentation.
  • The candidate will actively participate in project planning and coordination of projects with other laboratories.
  • DNA/RNA isolation & purification methods, PCR, confocal microscopy, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Advanced 3D cell culture of human primary intestinal tissues.
  • The candidate will use their scientific skills, biological knowledge and creativity to develop and apply cutting edge techniques to develop complex tissue culture models.
  • Train personnel from other collaborative laboratories and institutions in advanced tissue culture techniques.
  • The candidate will assist (co-author) in the preparation of research papers, meeting presentations, and grant proposals.

Required Qualifications*

  • Senior Level:  Master’s degree with at least 5 years’ experience in a laboratory management position.
  • Intermediate Level:  Bachelor's Degree with 4-5 years of experience in a related field.
  • Experience in advanced tissue culture training.
  • Experience in molecular biology tools (DNA/RNA purification, DNA transfection, qRT-PCR, Western Blot).
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills - the applicant must have the ability to work independently, and in a diverse team environment.
  • The applicant must have a strong collaborative track record with other investigators and institutions. 
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize efforts, and execute independently and collaboratively-developed ideas in a fast-paced environment.
  • Have a strong desire to stay abreast of new developments in the field, implement novel models as they emerge, and formulate new research goals.
  • A strong publication record.  Will have the opportunity to assist in the preparation and co-author manuscripts.
