NTNU - knowledge for a better world

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change everyday life.

Department of Marine Technology

We develop methods and technology related to the blue economy: oil and gas extraction at sea, ship technology and the equipment industry, fisheries and aquaculture. We also have a strong commitment to the development of sustainable solutions for offshore renewable energy, coastal infrastructure, and marine robotics. Marine technology helps to solve major global challenges related to the environment, climate, energy, food and efficient transport. The Department of Marine Technology is one of eight departments in the Faculty of Engineering.

This is NTNU

At NTNU, creating knowledge for a better world is the vision that unites our 7 000 employees and 40 000 students.

We are looking for dedicated employees to join us.

About the position

We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate at the Department of Marine Technology through the KPN project WINDMOOR (Advanced Wave and Wind Load Models for Floating Wind Turbine Mooring System Design).

Designing cost-effective mooring systems for floating wind turbines (FWTs) is challenging for shallow water – where hundreds of meters of chain on the seabed might be required in order to survive storms, or high stiffness might be needed to protect the power cable – but also for very deep water, where the cost of material becomes high. As recently highlighted by several industry stakeholders, understanding the design drivers for mooring systems is crucial.

Assessing novel mooring designs, including new materials, innovative methods of sharing anchors, or even floater-to-floater moorings, requires improved analysis methods, considering complex material behavior, accurate wave load models and wind field models, and aerodynamic interactions between FWTs in a farm.

The position reports to Erin Bachynski.

Job description

  • developments for improved wind load modelling, including atmospheric stability and wake effects, for floating wind turbines in farm formations
  • dynamic response of analysis of floating wind turbines considering new models for mooring systems and low-frequency hydrodynamic loads (to be developed in the WINDMOOR project)

Qualification requirements

PhD candidate:

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in marine technology, civil engineering, applied mathematics, or wind engineering or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

  • Relevant academic background related to hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, or structural responses of floating platforms
  • Programming/computational skills – in one or more of Fortran, C++, python or matlab
  • Good written and oral English language skills

Personal characteristics

  • Strong analytical skills
  • Positive attitude and interested in teamwork
  • Ability to take initiative and to work independently

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement
