Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Director, the Research Safety Engineer/Laser Safety Officer is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive research safety programs and procedures for ensuring the well-being of the Institute community. Grounded in the sciences such as physics, chemistry, or engineering, the candidate assists the Institute community by providing consultation, evaluations, hazard assessments, and training to reduce or eliminate workplace conditions that may lead to injury or loss of Institute resources. Through regular facility inspections and/or injury/incident-site investigations, identifies occupational health issues and formulates measures for mitigating workplace hazards. Support various designated divisions/departments and their respective safety committees as assigned.

Job Duties

  • Plan, manage, and execute complex tasks
  • Lead EHS members in the development and implementation of non-ionizing radiation, specifically lasers and industrial hygiene programs, including cranes and hoists, cryogenic and compressed gases
  • Annual review of programs, processes, and procedures to examine EHS situations, recommend improvements, and ensure a sustained evaluation and review of workplace conditions
  • Develop and/or deliver employee training, emergency preparedness and quality assurance programs
  • Perform lab safety inspections to identify hazardous conditions and recommend solutions to mitigate workplace hazards
  • Review plans and specifications for construction of new lab buildings to determine whether all safety and regulatory requirements have been met
  • Respond to injuries, accidents, and near misses and complete related investigative reports, as well as perform root causes analyses
  • Participate in on-call rotation with other Safety Engineers
  • Function as a first responder to the Institute in emergencies and part of Crisis Management Team during these emergencies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in physics, chemistry, or engineering
  • At least 6 years of professional experience in a comprehensive environmental, health and safety program
  • Physical Demands
  • Must be able to stand and walk for moderate periods of time
  • Lift and carry up to 30 lbs of tools and equipment
  • The ability to wear a respirator and other protective equipment when working under hazardous conditions
  • Environmental Conditions
  • Enter research laboratory settings replete with various hazardous, including lasers, chemical, bio hazardous and radioactive material
  • Protective equipment qualified to use: Gloves, respirators, lab coat, coveralls, and SCBA

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD degree in physics
  • 1 year of work experience in environmental, health and safety experience, preferably in a University setting
