  • Become involved in a rapidly expanding research field of solar hydrogen production
  • Work with leading researchers in the area of solar energy

Position Overview:

The purpose of this appointment is to contribute to the fundamental physical understanding and design of solar hydrogen systems. The position is nominally for two years, with the possibility of an extension to three years.

The appointee will work within a world-leading, interdisciplinary solar energy group to theoretically investigate limiting factors and underlying physical mechanisms of novel solar hydrogen generation concepts. The appointee is expected to carry out independent research including, but not limited to, calculations of solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies in different device concepts; combining semiconductor physics, optics, and electrochemistry theory to build conceptual models of device performance and develop design principles for novel device configurations.

This is an exciting opportunity to become involved in a rapidly expanding research field. Hydrogen production will play a key role in reducing carbon emissions in the future, both as an energy vector, and as replacement for fossil fuels in industrial processes. ANU has an excellent track record in undertaking cutting edge research and commercialisation in the field of solar energy. Further information is available at and

The positions are located in the Research School of Electrical, Energy and Materials Engineering. The appointees are accountable to the Director of the Research School. The appointees are also accountable to the lead investigators on the project, Professor Kylie Catchpole and Dr Fiona J Beck.

As an academic member of the Research School of Engineering the appointees will be required to contribute to research, education and outreach agendas of the School both nationally and internationally in a manner that is appropriate to the level of appointment. Staff members are expected to contribute cooperatively to the overall intellectual life of the School, College and University.

Maintaining good relationships with new and existing collaborative partners, other national and international research institutions, Australian federal and state government research funding organisations and international research funding bodies, is integral to the positions.
