The Research Technologist will assist in mouse colony and mouse management and experiments, and will collect and analyze the experiment data.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This description is a general statement of required duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis. It does not exclude other duties as assigned.

  • Follow established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include: basic tissue culture and 3D tissue culture, basic molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques.
  • Coordinate mouse breeding and experiments. Collect mouse samples (such as stool and tail snips) for analysis. Actively participate in animal experiments including culturing stool bacteria. Infect animals through the oral route using designated equipment. Potential for germ-free mouse work. May need to administer antibiotics or other anti-infective to animals using specially prepared antibiotic water or oral gavage
  • Maintain accurate, rigorous logs of samples, sample use, site of storage. Enter data into database(s) as directed.
  • Collect, organize and analyze experimental data.
  • Monitor inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies.
  • Assist in the cultivation of pathogenic bacteria such as Bacteroides fragilis strains
  • Will handle bio-hazardous material under Biosafety Level 2 conditions
  • Interact with faculty, lab and administrative staff, students, postdoctoral fellows, and outside vendors.
  • Meet weekly with designated laboratory staff to review recent data, troubleshoot current experiments, review new experimental protocols and prioritize new experiments.
  • Demonstrate organization, curiosity, problem solving, resourcefulness, and flexibility. Time flexibility for working hours required to process human specimens and work with germ-free mice.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field,

Preferred:

Some related post-undergraduate work experience desired.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
