Research Data Analyst

The Research Data Analyst for the Department of Oncology will develop and apply computational and statistical methods for the integrated analysis of high throughput sequencing studies that may include whole genome, methylation, and/or RNA sequencing platforms.  These methods will be used to enhance risk prediction for precision medicine applications. Accepted candidates will benefit from the diverse expertise across the computational / statistical and laboratory-based research groups, which have existing collaborations. Ongoing studies include, but are not limited to, early detection of cancer and the identification of genomic biomarkers of drug response.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Consults with clinical and laboratory investigators to determine their needs with respect to analysis of high-throughput genomics data in collaboration with a member of the faculty.
Carries out appropriate methodologic procedures for biologically informed, statistically driven analysis of high-dimensional genomics data.
Participates in regularly scheduled meetings with study investigators and team. Helps with publications as needed.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Computer Science Bioinformatics or related field and a minimum of three years of related experience in analyzying genomic data, experience with Linux/UNIX and code development, optimization, and testing required.

Additional education (Master's level) may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred:  

Master’s Degree in Statistics, Computer Science Bioinformatics or related field desired.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities / Competencies:

  • Proficiency with bioinformatics concepts, methods, and tools, with experience working in languages such as R, C++, Perl or Python, and SQL.
  • Coursework or work experience covering topics in statistics, molecular biology, genetics, and script-level programming.
  • Proficiency with genomic data, tools, and databases.
  • Familiarity with common computational biology tools.
  • Experience with experimental design principles, reproducible research principles, and data storage, security, and safety.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in consulting with researchers and understanding their problems.
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills in the preparation and presentation of reports.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to details are required.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
