The School

The established team of psychology academics and researchers in the Faculty of Science and Health will form a new School of Psychology in September 2019. The Psychology team are a dynamic group with a strong record of excellence in teaching and research. The BSc Psychology commenced in 2010 and over the past 9 years has gained a reputation for strong stakeholder relations and highly successful graduates. Teaching on the pre-professional BSc degree programme, accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland, is research-led with a strong focus on research, practical and work-related skills. The MSc Psychology (Conversion) commended in 2018 and a new MSc in Psychology and Wellbeing will come on stream in September 2019.

We seek to add an individual with a strong academic track record and expertise in research methods and statistics or, alternatively, expertise in other research areas that will complement the existing teaching and research strengths of the team.

Position

The successful candidate will conduct high quality research and teaching in core and specialist areas of psychology and will also participate in the School’s external engagement activities. Further, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to programme management, placement supervision, research supervision and the service activities of the School and University.

Main Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Research

To contribute to the research activity of the School of Psychology by:

  • Publishing new ideas and findings in high impact international journals
  • Achieving measurable societal, economic, individual, health, policy, professional, or capacity impact, as appropriate
  • Seeking funds to support research initiatives
  • Contributing to research activities such as conferences, seminars etc.
  • Supervising postgraduate research students
  • Contributing to the research culture and environment in the School and, where appropriate, working collaboratively on research initiatives.

Teaching

To contribute to the teaching and learning activity of the School of Psychology by:

  • Delivering modules in a manner consistent with the highest academic standards
  • Using a wide range of teaching and assessment methodologies which foster a deep approach to learning and which equip students with the skills and attributes needed to be lifelong learners
  • Working proactively to enhance and enrich existing modules and programmes
  • Contributing to the design and development of new modules and programmes
  • Providing research supervision for taught postgraduate students

Service

To contribute to the leadership, management and administration of the School by:

  • Delivering management and service roles to a high standard
  • Actively engaging in accreditation-related activities
  • Contributing proactively to relevant School and University committees, working groups and meetings
  • Contributing to the running of the School’s activities through participation in, for example, promotional events and INTRA (work placement) visits.
  • External Engagement to enhance the reputation and impact of the School through engagement in external academic, business, professional, public sector and community activities

Person Specification

Candidates must have an undergraduate degree and PhD in Psychology, or their equivalents, and have a strong academic record. Previous teaching and research experience is required, and eligibility for graduate membership of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) is preferred. Relevant expertise in the area of research methods and statistics is desirable.

We are seeking candidates who have a well-defined research plan and have the capability to publish in high impact international journals. Candidates should have (or be able to develop) international networks and collaborations. Candidates should also demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills consistent with the highest quality of teaching and learning, together with evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play an important role in the further development of the School’s national and international reputation, and to make a significant contribution to the research activity and enterprise engagement of the School and to the design, delivery and management of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Salary Scales:

*Assistant Professor (Lecturer Above Bar):           *€52,188 – €83,039 per annum

*Assistant Professor (Lecturer Below Bar):            *€39,123 – €53,784 per annum

*Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will be made on the appropriate point of the relevant salary scale in line with current Government pay policy
