About the opportunity
We are seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer (Level C academic) to be responsible for a range of tasks within the research group of Professor Fernando Calamante, including implementation and further development of novel MRI technology (MR image acquisition, processing, and/or modelling), especially related to study brain connectivity, structure, function and quantification of tissue properties. The role also involves independently conceiving and conducting original research, and applying cutting edge MRI techniques to neuroscience and clinical translational research. The Level C is expected to very actively produce published works in refereed journals, books, conference, reports and other publications from his/her own independently conceived research. The role also involves providing an effective interface and effective relationship management with more junior members of the lab, as well as contributing to the development of the skills of the lab’s research team (including all aspects of supervision and training of staff, students, and research collaborators). The Senior Lecturer is also expected to apply for competitive funding as Lead Investigator, and contribute to the development of grant proposals by other researchers in the lab. This new position is intended to seed collaborations between Professor Calamante’s group and researchers from the Westmead Clinical School, as well as be involved in research projects with other key collaborators of the lab.

- PhD in a closely-related discipline.
- Recognised international academic standing in MRI, and excellent experience in high level MRI image acquisition and/or processing
- Proven ability of independently conceiving and developing new techniques for acquisition, reconstruction and/or post-processing of MRI data
- A strong track-record in research, including high quality body of work published in peer reviewed journals, and success in attracting competitive research funding

Professor Calamante is the Directory of Sydney Imaging, the University’s biomedical imaging Core Research Facility. He is also Professor in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical & Mechatronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies. He is internationally recognised for the development of advanced MRI methods. His lab's main research interests include: (1) the development and application of MRI methods to measure the blood delivery to brain tissue (with a technique known as Perfusion MRI), (2) the use of Diffusion MRI methods to map the structural connections in the brain (that is, the brain ‘wiring’), and (3) how to use this ‘wiring’ information as a tool for multi-parametric image analysis and modelling. The methods developed by Professor Calamante and colleagues are becoming essential tools in neuroscience, such as to further our understanding of brain networks in the healthy brain, and the effects of their disruptions in disease.
