Mansfield College is what an Oxford College should be in the 21st century: warm, welcoming, socially and educationally diverse. One of the 39 constituent colleges of the University of Oxford, it was founded by non-conformists in the 1880s and since its foundation has offered under-represented and excluded constituencies access to an Oxford education. From the late 20th century, Mansfield has undertaken sustained and serious work to ensure that the College is intellectually excellent but never socially exclusive, and has taken active steps to ensure it attracts and fairly selects candidates from diverse backgrounds.
The arrival of a new Principal, Helen Mountfield QC, in September 2018, heralds a new phase of the College’s life and a renewed vision. The College now wishes to appoint a Bursar, a role which plays a significant part in the delivery of the College’s mission and vision.
The Bursar is the senior administrative post within the College. Much more than the College’s financial lead, this is a broad and challenging role that calls for an individual who can operate through the lens of a general manager with sound core finance skills. Working closely with the Principal, the Director of Development, and the Senior Tutor as one of the College’s top officers, the Bursar is responsible for the management of all staff and non-staff resources. She or he will be a Governing Body Fellow of the College.
The successful candidate will combine successful senior leadership experience across business operations in complex organisations, with keen financial planning, budgeting and control experience, and demonstrable belief in the distinct educational purpose of Mansfield College.
