Position Overview

The Flexible Learning Technical Officer actively contributes to the College of Business, Law and Governance Online Program by providing support for students in internal and external courses within the College. The incumbent provides timely support and active case management of student and lecturer’s technical issues to ensure positive online learning experiences.

The Flexible Learning Technical Officer contributes to the maintenance of a 7 day a week Online Program; monitoring and responding to student and lecturer enquiries.

The Office of the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies provides collaborative leadership with the Colleges and ensures that the Colleges are able to deliver the core business of learning and teaching, research and engagement and contribute effectively to the strategic agenda. The Division office drives the strategic objectives of the Division and also services a proportion of College administrative operations.

As part of the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies, the College of Business, Law and Governance promotes, fosters, supports and administers quality teaching and research at JCU in the areas of Business, Law, Information Technology and Political Science.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Develop orientation resources packs and induct and orient external students to the College online program to enhance the student learning experience.
  2. Collaborate with the Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching; Online Learning Developer and academic staff to support the delivery of the College online program.
  3. Contribute to the maintenance of a 7 day a week technical support system, by monitoring and responding to student and lecturer enquires from the College Online email account.
  4. Identify and analyse recurrent technical issues and collaborate and liaise with the LearnJCU team to resolve them.
  5. Maintain the College Online Communities site and College webpage by identifying and uploading new and revised information.
  6. Provide technical support and problem-solve issues as they arise in the College Online Program referring in accordance with College policies and procedures. 
  7. Collaborate, promote and implement targeted interventions aimed at increasing student retention in the College Online Program including; instructing and supporting students in recording presentations; demonstrating video editing, orientating students to and how to do presentations in BlackBoard Collaborate and undertaking system testing.
  8. Provide technical support and instructional coaching to academic staff including; video editing; online testing and tutorial development; iPad support and managing technical equipment.
  9. Manage the College Online program social networking sites, develop group pages, supervise and mentor student online supporters, develop, monitor and facilitate peer discussion
  10. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
  11. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.
  12. Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.

Generic Accountabilities  

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.  

  1. The Flexible Learning Technical Officer is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Flexible Learning Technical Officer is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.  This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations.  Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. 
  3. The Flexible Learning Technical Officer is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Special Conditions

  • It is a requirement of this position that the incumbent will work outside of normal working hours including evening and weekends on a rotation basis.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. Degree qualification with at least two years relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience in online education and/or education and/or training.
  2. Ability to problem-solve computer/tablet/smart phone software issues/apps including experience in Learning Management Systems, online conferencing platforms and test generators.
  3. Demonstrated abilities in video editing, with ability to complete duties using a range of different software packages, including Microsoft Excel and Word.
  4. Demonstrated well-developed written and oral communications skills with demonstrated ability to collaborate in a team environment and work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
