UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM
COLLEGE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS – 36297
SALARY: Competitive package for an outstanding candidate.
HOURS: Full time
LOCATION: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK
With more than 8,000 staff, 34,000 students and 300,000 alumni across the globe, we think, recruit, and compete worldwide. Ranked in the top 100 universities globally and the top 20 in all domestic league tables, the quality of what we do at Birmingham is widely recognised. We were awarded Gold in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework and in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), more than 80 per cent of our research was rated as internationally excellent or world-leading.
As a member of the University’s senior leadership team, and reporting to the Academic Registrar with a dotted report line to the PVC and Head of College, the College Director of Operations is responsible for leading, directing and developing the College’s Professional Services’ operations and administration in order to support this diverse and complex College. The College is one of the largest in the University and has benefitted from significant investment in staff and estate as part of the University’s strategic vision to 2026. This is a challenging but rewarding role; it provides the nexus between research, teaching and administrative practice and policy across seven Schools, each with its own priorities and development plans and strong sense of academic identity.
The successful candidate will have a strong empathy for, and interest in, Higher Education in a research-intensive university, possess significant experience of management and diplomacy at a senior level in a University or similarly complex organisation and be intellectually confident. The postholder will demonstrate a careful balance of coherence and pragmatism which will ensure the development of a cross-College service that meets the needs of diverse stakeholders across the University.
