Professorial appointment may be available for suitable candidates- Starting salary from £63,153 to £69,695 per annum with further progression opportunities to £86,512

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences is a vibrant and innovative environment containing five academic departments: Medical Science and Public Health, Nursing Science, Midwifery and Health Sciences, Rehabilitation and Sport Science and Social Sciences and Social Work and a number of research centres that focus on Clinical Research, Long Term Health Challenges and Marginalised Voices. We are investing in some exciting new positions to further align our teaching and research portfolio toward BU’s 2025 strategic plan and the UN Sustainable Development Goals and to position the faculty as a driver of social and economic change.

We are looking for a Head of Department for our new of Midwifery and Health Sciences Department. This new department brings together academics involved in community, pre-hospital and in-hospital care to build capacity and critical mass for income generation, both in-terms of education provision and strong research programmes. We have existing education programmes in midwifery, paramedic science and operating department practice linked to the NHS, HEE, International networks and aligned to professional bodies, which successfully meet workforce needs and provide a platform for further development. 

The department also has a strong research foundation with an international track record for income generation within the Centre for Midwifery, Maternal and Perinatal Health and the BU Integrative Wellbeing Centre. It is expected the department will continue to attract research funding in health sciences using assistive technologies and Animation, Simulation & Visualisation creating research that is innovative and impactful and addresses societal needs.

You will be instrumental is setting the direction of the department, implementing strategic policy,  working collaboratively with key practice partners and ensuring the highest possible standards of excellence are achieved. 

You will ideally have a professional registration strong record of scholarship and research in one of these areas and demonstrable success in leading a department or group with responsibility for significant teaching/research activity. You will be supported in your role by Deputy Heads of Department. 

A bespoke and comprehensive programme of development and support will be available for successful appointees. The programme will be framed in the context of the University’s strategic plan, BU2025.

You will be qualified to Doctorate level or equivalent in a relevant field. You will have demonstrated global research leadership and you will be committed to a culture of academic excellence and continuous improvement.
