Professor of Philosophy

Founded in 1911, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is committed to the highest standards of excellence in teaching and research. HKU has a total of around 28,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students who are recruited globally, and more than 2,000 members of academic and academic-related staff coming from multi-cultural backgrounds, many of whom are internationally renowned.

The Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy is part of the School of Humanities within the Faculty of Arts. It is a diverse and vibrant unit with around ten members of teaching staff, teaching undergraduate students from different faculties within the University and attracting 20-30 new majors each year. The Department of Philosophy also offers two higher degrees by research, the M.Phil and the Ph.D. In recent years, the Department has made a significant commitment and contribution to HKU’s new Common Core Curriculum, offering many courses on critical thinking, values, and Chinese philosophy. The Department is also a pioneer in online teaching.

The Department has research strengths in Chinese and comparative philosophy, philosophy of mind and language, ethics and politics, and the history of European philosophy. Its undergraduate teaching spans a wide range of fields, including knowledge and reality, mind and language, moral and political philosophy, and history of philosophy and covers Western, Chinese, and comparative philosophy.

The Role

The Faculty of Arts seeks to appoint a senior scholar in one or more of the following areas: Asian and Comparative Philosophy; Epistemology and Philosophy of Science; Experimental Philosophy; History of Philosophy; Metaphysics; Philosophy of Language; Philosophy of Mind and Psychology; or another relevant area. Accountable to the Dean of Faculty and Head of School, the ideal candidate will be an internationally recognised academic with a passion for both research and teaching.

Terms of Appointment

Appointment will be on a tenured basis. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
