The Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London invites applications for 1 PhD Studentship starting in September/October 2019. 

Applications are invited for 1 studentship funded by Royal Holloway University of London and associated with the European Research Council INtheSELF Project, led by Professor Manos Tsakiris at the Lab of Action & Body, Department of Psychology,  Royal Holloway, University of London. The project will involve either (i) testing the emergence and development of interoceptive abilities in parallel with the development of the sense of self in infants, aged 6 months to 3 years old (e.g. developmental path) or (ii) the development of new measures to test the role of interoception for adult social cognition.

Applicants should be UK/EU citizens. They should ideally hold, or be predicted to achieve, a first class undergraduate degree or equivalent in Psychology or related disciplines (minimum requirement: 2.1). An MSc in a psychology- or neuroscience-related subject is desirable but not essential. Experience with testing infants and/or toddlers (especially for the developmental project) as well as experience with physiological (HR) and/or electrophysiological (EEG) measures are highly desirable but not essential.

The Department has an active and expanding postgraduate research community, is well-equipped for research, and is situated on a beautiful campus close to London. We were ranked 6^th out of 82 UK Psychology Departments in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), with 93% of our research classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. Research in the department spans a breadth of topics across psychological sciences and neuroscience. We are supported by excellent facilities including a research-designated functional neuroimaging unit (fMRI), EEG, TMS, tDCS and eye-tracking; as well as labs dedicated to sleep, vestibular-multisensory integration, psychophysiology, psycholinguistics and infant cognition. Our postgraduate researchers have access toa range of research training opportunities through RHUL Researcher Development Programme and Psychology-specific Research Training Seminars. The studentship will cover UK/EU tuition fees and a stipend at the UKRI rate of £17,009 for 2019/20. 

You do not need to submit a research proposal for this project. Instead, please submit your CV and a 1-page personal statement where you (i) explain how your past research experience and studies have prepared you for this project, and (ii) your preference for one of the two topics described above (i.e. development of self or adult social cognition) .
