Associate Director for Clinical Services

General Summary:

The Johns Hopkins University Counseling Center (CC) provides services to students in full-time graduate and undergraduate academic programs in the Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering, as well as the Peabody Institute of Music.

As an Associate Director of the CC, this person serves as a member of the CC’s executive team (which includes the CC’s Director, 3 associate directors – Clinical; Training; and Outreach and Sexual Assault Services - and the Clinic Supervisor). This executive team assists the Director of the CC in providing leadership and managerial oversight of the administrative, clinical, consultative and outreach functions of the CC; planning, development and implementation of new policies and initiatives; and providing administrative supervision of professional staff.

This position reports to the Director of the Counseling Center.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists the CC Director in providing leadership and managerial oversight of the clinical functions, policies and procedures of the CC.
  • Leads the CC’s weekly Case Management Meeting and leads the CC’s Clinical Services Committee.
  • As with the other clinical members of the Executive Committee, serves as a resource for clinical staff regarding issues such as state law, confidentiality, and the reporting of abuse.
  • Stays up-to-date with national policy-related trends regarding the management and provision of clinical services.
  • Assists in the Management of the Counseling Center’s electronic record system (Titanium).
  • Provides clinical supervision and evaluation of 1/3 of the not-yet-licensed clinical staff; provides administrative supervision and evaluation of 1/3 of the licensed clinical staff;; and is expected to be in the pool of clinicians eligible to provide clinical supervision of the CC’s doctoral psychology interns.
  • Manages the orientation and training for new staff and interns regarding CC clinical service policies and procedures.
  • Provides a reduced load of clinical services, including initial consultations, individual counseling, group counseling, couples counseling and crisis intervention.
  • Provides afterhours (as backup to ProtoCall) on-call shifts, in rotation with the rest of the clinical staff.
  • Participates in outreach, and consultation services to the university community.
  • Engages in professional activities at the local, regional, and/or national levels.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the CC Director.

Education and Licensure:

  • Doctorate in psychology is required.
  • Must be eligible to be licensed as a psychologist in Maryland and obtain licensure within 1 year of hire.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of post-licensure clinical experience, preferably in a university counseling center setting.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical supervisory experience.
  • A record of administrative and coordinator responsibility and experience, preferably in a counseling center setting.

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:

  • Significant experience and expertise regarding the clinical services provided in a counseling center setting.
  • Significant experience with an electronic records system, preferably Titanium.
  • Demonstrated experience in administrative coordinator and supervisory capacities.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a counseling center team.
  • Ability to effectively manage clinical crisis situations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of student issues.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Commitment to one’s own ongoing development of multicultural competence as a psychologist.
  • Commitment to the developmental orientation of counseling services.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
