The Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality (CPI) is a nonpartisan research center at Stanford University. The CPI’s mission is to conduct and facilitate research on issues of domestic poverty, mobility, and inequality and to disseminate the results of this research to scholars, policy makers, and the general public. The guiding principle of the Center’s work is that research findings should be evidence-based, the result of rigorous scientific inquiry, and communicated clearly and objectively. The CPI supports research by new and established scholars, trains the next generation of scholars and policy analysts, and disseminates the very best research on poverty, mobility, and inequality.

Since 2006, the Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality has pursued research, training, and policy analysis on poverty and inequality. The backdrop to this initiative is a recognition that poverty and inequality have become an unprecedented threat and that the great universities of the world must address this threat with all the resources and initiative that we have applied in the past to other major social problems.  Our current work involves using administrative California tax records to understand the impact of social policy administered through the tax code and the minimum wage on poverty and different household outcomes.  In addition, we are using linked Census Bureau data to understand intergenerational mobility across race, immigration status, family status, and other demographics.  Finally, we are partnering with the University of Michigan and the U.S. Census Bureau to build up the nation’s research infrastructure for monitoring, evaluating, and building social programs. The current infrastructure is very poorly developed, and we are building a new and improved infrastructure for the 21st century.

We are looking to hire one full-time research data analyst (RDA) for the work with our research group on the Administrative Data Pilot (ADP) program and other administrative data enabled research programs. The research uses administrative data and quasi-experimental methods to evaluate the impact of local government programs on its recipients. The work will include a variety of tasks that provides preparation for graduate school, such as analyzing data, developing statistical models, creating presentations, and editing research papers. In addition to working with faculty as research assistants, RDAs frequently co-author papers with other students or faculty members. The RDA will interact regularly with professors and their collaborators.

This is a fixed term position through August 31, 2020.

Your responsibilities include*:

  • Collect, manage and clean datasets.
  • Employ new and existing tools to interpret, analyze, and visualize multivariate relationships in data.
  • Create databases and reports, develop algorithms and statistical models, and perform statistical analyses appropriate to data and reporting requirements.
  • Use system reports and analyses to identify potentially problematic data, make corrections, and determine root cause for data problems from input errors or inadequate field edits, and suggest possible solutions.
  • Develop reports, charts, graphs and tables for use by investigators and for publication and presentation.
  • Communicate with government officials, grant agencies and industry representatives.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics or engineering.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Substantial experience with MS Office and statistical packages such as R or Stata.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
